I guess maybe there was a break-in period. After taking this camping and actually sleeping on it the horrible crackling sound went away. No complaints from my tent mates. This thing is super comfortable. I'm a side sleeper and there are no issues with bottoming out. Biggest issue I had was with how high you are off the ground and lose arms tend to feel like they are dangling off the edge of a bed. Almost feels as comfortable as our bed at home.
Okay, I inflated this to get pics for the review, and am now too comfortable to get up. So typing this while laying on the trekology 😅
This comes from the perspective of an avid car camper getting into backpacking.
Slept on this, w/ a 40* bag on a 50* night (I sleep cold) and woke at dawn so well rested I was, for a second, convinced I was burrowed in my comforter at home. Until the texture of my bag reminded me.
I am a side/stomach sleeper, with the preference for the knee up, this mat is not ideal for that. But all sleeping pads are narrow for that position. The pro to this mat, and why I'm getting another one for my 5yr, is the curve keeps you on the mat at night. No rolls, or limbs meeting the cold ground and shocking you up!
This pad does not bottom out when sitting on it for me.
My 5yr did the initial durability test. Held up to 20 minutes of 50lbs of high energy jumping, diving, and laying on this pad. Plus the dog walking across it, and you'd never know.
Packs down great for kayak camping, and I can't wait to test it in the back country!
I spent a long weekend sleeping on this pad and it was GREAT! At 4 inches thick, I never bottomed out. I wore my fit bit and my sleep quality was actually the same or slightly higher than at home (tho a full day of hiking may have been a factor 😅) the pad held air every night, no issues with deflation (and it comes with some patches!)
The coldest night was 53° and the pad was more than sufficient at keeping me warm. It has a listed R value of 1.6, so this is really for late spring, summer, early fall camping (which again, is the window with young kids!)
If I have 1 criticism. It's the material is slick! Our tent location was on the slightest of inclines, and this pad was slipping on the tent floor and so was my bag on top. I know other pads come with grippers, but they are obviously more expensive and to be honest, if I was on a flat surface, I doubt this would be an issue.
This pad is the perfect budget compromise for someone looking for something that is very comfortable and well suited for summer camping either out of a car or for short hikes. The pad is light enough and packs down small enough to be good for short backpacking trips, 1-3 nights, but it is definitely not for ultra-light trips or for nights below 40°. In my opinion, the perfect "starter pad" than can be handed down to the kids as they get their start!
5 stars taking the price into consideration. I like it enough that if there was a wide insulated version, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
