Holy crap balls! For the money this pack is awesome!! I have Mountainsmith and Osprey packs and this seems very well made. I would assume for the money you will never find a better made pack, with this many features, anywhere. I bought this as a bug out bag to leave in the closet or in my truck, but now I want to just use it for hiking. The only complaint was a grommet in one of the straps will most probably pull out very soon. I am also rather muscular, ok fat, and the waist belt is more than long enough for my waist. Watched many YouTube reviews that will also tell you this pack is super nice. If funds are short and your just getting started this is a great place to start with hiking gear.

    Good backpack

This backpack has been great. I can fit my Alps mountaineering lynx 2 tent in the sleeping bag compartment with enough room for the footprint. My sleep system and mess kit fit in the top with enough room for extra clothes and my 12L bear bag. Everything else I need fits in the pockets. I also strap my fly rod and my sling pack to the outside.

    Great backpack, lots of space

This is a surprisingly spacious backpack. It looks small from the outside, but it's actually quite big. There's a lot of pockets for small items. It's got a lot of adjustable belts and hoops, which you can adjust as per the weight and comfort. Also has a rain fly and a water pouch compartment. It also comes with a "how to pack optimally" guide, which I've unfortunately lost. Idk what else you look for in a backpack.

    Almost perfect

I really like this backpack, but there's one drawback... The sleeping bag compartment. It's too small for anything but a light summer sleeping bag. I use it for clothes instead most of the time. The zipper is a bit difficult on this compartment as well. Otherwise, I really like it. The pockets on the side help me keep the most necessary items on hand. I'm only 5'1" tall and I was able to adjust the pack so that it's comfortable for me to carry.

    Excellent Pack for the Price

I just received my pack this week. I've loaded and unloaded the pack a few times trying to tweak my load for a 3 day 63 mile Florida Trail hike from Lake Okeechobee to Hobe Sound (Ocean to Lake Trail). The materials all appear very durable. I thought the stitching in some areas would be reinforced a little better like another pack I own, but it still seems solid and I don't see any potential issues. The zippers are strong, the sleeping bag compartment at the bottom is roomy, and the waist belt and shoulder straps are comfy. The main compartment, side pockets, and pockets in the top rain flap are very functional. The two aluminum stiffeners are sturdy and well placed. The rain cover is completely integrated, rip-stop material, lined for waterproofing, and seems perfectly suitable for a torrential downpour.I have one complaint. My waist is 32 inches, but I have the waist belt cinched tightly. This is kind of concerning. You can lose weight during a long trip and may not have a lot of room for adjustments. If you have less than a 30 inch waist this probably won't work for you. Fortunately, I have a 30"-31" waist when I am working out regularly and doing a lot of cardio, so it should be fine for me. Unfortunately, my recent workouts are limited to carrying a baby throughout the day and heavy reps curling 12oz IPAs:)I'll update my review if I run into any issues after three days of hard use.UPDATE 02/07/2018: The pack held up like a champ. It was extremely comfortable. The waistband and shoulder straps felt great. My only wish is it were a pound lighter, but it’s just fine for me. I can’t justify paying double the price when I don’t have the chance to hike long distances regularly. I’m very glad I bought this pack!

    Best backpack for tall people

I have an extremely long torso and this is so far the only backpack I found that is extremely comfortable and fits me correctly. I have tried on many, many from other companies and this is the only one that reaches my lower back and the side supports are around my waist. I would like to try out more from Osprey, but I have only tried a few and so far none fit. I am 6'5" and 275 lbs

Very sturdy, and the straps are handy.

This backpack is quite sturdy, and the top and bottom straps allow you to carry both a sleeping back and a tent externally. It does weigh a few more pounds than some other backpacks, but that's where the sturdiness comes from.

This is an awesome pack for the money spent

This is an awesome pack for the money spent on it. It has everything you would need in a pack and is fully adjustable I am a scoutmaster and we go camping at least once a month. I use this pack all the time. I did buy a smaller pack for the day hikes once we set base camp I use it to go exploring. this pack easily holds a weeks worth of food and equipment inside. I also bought the xxl cot and Teton tent with the xxl pad to go with it.It is much too heavy for back packing but is awesome to have for our regular none hiking campouts. when we go hiking in the mountains I bring my Hennessey Hammock and it is the best sleep ever. I tell all of our scout parents about this pack because it is a bargain price and top notch quality craftsmanship. I just wish there was a wider range of colors so that the scouts could tell theirs apart from mine. Then maybe my snacks would last longer...

Great product and Teton customer service when issues arise.

I love the back "TETON Sports Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack Metallic Silver" I purchased on this item on September 5, 2017. My only complaint would be that one of the side pouch zipper extensions pulls came off. I have not been able to get is back togather adequately. Once when I thought I did I could not get in on the zipper as it was to short to loop upon itself. So after that I tried to reassemble it while it was on the zipper and that did not work either. I wrote teton to let them know of this weakness and within a half hour they replied for a picture for reference and my address. I replied right back with this and within minutes they notified me it was awaiting shipment and a tracking number would be assigned. This kind of response really encourages me to deal with Teton again. Thank you Teton :)

    Unexpectedly GREAT backpack!

This backpack was somewhat of an impulse buy since I needed to buy a backpack before I went backpacking in Shenandoah for a few nights. I was expecting something slightly more uncomfortable because of the low price and lack of name recognition (Teton). However, this backpack turned out to be super comfortable and awesome! It has tons of compartments, a reliable built-in rain cover, and it is surprisingly light! I have used it several times now, and I plan on keeping this guy for a long time. I have also ended up ordering their smaller sized pack for more frequent use! Thanks for the great product, I hope to keep getting great use out of it!

the squeak was so loud by the end of the day i felt like i had been too a bagpipe concert

Purchased this pack and immediately took it on an overnighter in the mountains. Six miles down and six miles up carrying a 15 degree bag, tent food, water, sleeping pad, pillow, light jacket, and rain gear. The Teton Sports pack still had room and was infiniteiy adjustable. The only real problem i had was an extremely loud squeaking sound coming from the shoulder pad attachment point right between the shoulder blades. the squeak was so loud by the end of the day i felt like i had been too a bagpipe concert. That night, sitting around the campfire i thought about what i might do to rectify the problem. i rubbed my finger along the folds of my nose and applied the oil onto the nylon attachment point along with some ear wax. gross,i know, however the squeak was completely gone the next day! I have since cleaned it off and applied bees wax to the affected area and, so far permanently fixed the problem. great pack for the money. Roomy but not too large and well built.

Side Bag Pockets a PLUS! Others don’t have that.

It’s honestly a great bag, it’s one of the only ones that have the convenient side pockets on the sides compared to the other ones that don’t. The material is amazing, very durable, good for any weather it seems. Also the divider inside is an excellent idea. The waist straps are removable as well so you can use it as an ordinary (big) backpack. They should make side pockets on the Straps , not sure why they haven’t done that at all. Like easy access pockets.

    Awesome

I took this on a ~4 mile test hike this weekend to make sure it will work for backpacking. I was loaded with about 29 pounds of gear, including a REI camp dome 4 tent. At first I was worried because the top of the pack was hanging off my back, but then my hiking partner noticed there are straps that go along the top of the shoulder pads to the top of the pack. Once we tightened those it was MUCH better. I also moved the adjustable shoulder straps around until I found a comfortable height for them. I did the first half of the hike with my tent strapped to the bottom of the bag, which worked pretty well, but when I strapped the tent under the top part of the pack, the pack set really snug on my back which was even better. I think this was because my pack was only 3/4 full, so putting the tent up there made it seem like it was completely full. The bag has two pockets on one side, and one larger pocket on the other side, and a large pocket in the top where it says "TETON sports". They all have water proof (resistant?) zippers. It has 6 small loops down the back that you can attach carribeaners of gear to. Also, there are two large loops at the bottom that you can attach a tent/sleeping bag/pad to, and two medium loops on top that you could fit a tent or sleeping pad or summer sleeping bag in. The sleeping bag pouch at the bottom is definitely a little small BUT the barrier between the sleeping bag compartment and the rest of the bag has a zipper, so you can open that up and pretend like you don't have a sleeping bag compartment at all, and then the zipper on the bottom of the bag serves as a rear entrance to your pack which is really handy. The padding on the pack works pretty well, the center of your back get's a lot of air, but on a hot day the few spots where the padding touches will get a little sweaty. I had 0 problems with the velcro on the shoulder straps, and actually found it quite handy. The only real downsides I can see are that the main clip that goes around your waist looked like it might eventually wear down, and the zippers are a little cheap. The clip is large, but the bottom hook looks like it could pull out some day. However, they offer a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects (similar to the north face), so I think that would be covered. The zippers can be a little hard to open sometimes, but I found that the pocket zippers got smoother with each use. The hardest zipper is the one on the sleeping bag pouch. Here are my tips for using this pack:-Get comfortable. It will take some time to get the pack adjusted to you, but its worth it. These packs are designed to put most of the weight on your hips, which is where humans are designed to carry weight, not on their shoulders. Loosen the shoulder straps, then clip on the waist belt and tighten it as much as you can (without squeezing your guts out). Then tighten your shoulder straps until the bag is snug against your back. Now clip the chest clip together and tighten it. The idea is to have the pressure points on your chest and shoulder blades instead of the tops of your shoulder. This bag has a lot of adjustability, so if something feels wrong, there is probable a strap somewhere that can fix it.-Pack your bag properly. Most people recommend a setup like this: sleeping bag in the bottom, heavier items (food bag) next, then lighter items on top. You want your center of gravity to be just above your hips so you're not off balance and the bag isn't trying to pull away from your shoulders.-Pack the bag full. If you're bag isn't full to the top, stuff a pillow in there. It'll make for a better sleep, and the pack will fit better on your back.-Pack light. The difference between 20lbs of gear and 29 pounds of gear is a world of a difference. Pack dehydrated foods and bring a water filter so you don't have to pack 4 liters of water with you. Socks are more important than shirts, but anything that will keep you dry is worth the weight.

    Great quality for the price!

Heavy-duty construction with quality materials. I was unsure when I ordered how the pack would compare to more expensive rucks I have owned in the past. Very pleased with what arrived. I've taken the pack out several times with varying loads. Suspension system is adequately adjustable for a range of sizes and was easy to balance the load out on the hips. I carry a lot of external gear - trekking poles, ropes, etc. at times and the pack has plenty of attachment points that are hefty enough to take constant pulling/tugging/abrasion. Very satisfied with my purchase.

No back pain while fully loaded

This is a great backpack, I was a little weary having used arcteryx before, and this price seemed too good to be true, but a friend of mine had this bag and he really recommended it when we went out hiking. And I can’t say how happy I am with it, the material is heavy duty, it distributes weight phenomenally, considering I have an axe, hatchet, and shovel on my pack, food, sleeping bag, clothes, cooking supplies, but it still isn’t bad at all for how it feels on my back. It’s probably 40lbs worth of gear, and I can hike, walk, and even do lunges while wearing it, and squat down with no issues. And I’ve had back problems for years from a car accident and this bag doesn’t flare anything up at all. Highly recommend.

I researched and researched and read review after review on backpacks of this type. So far, I’mImpressed. It fits very well and is comfortable. It seems sturdy enough. I’d review this after I use it but that won’t be for a few more months. It has plenty of room and plenty of pockets. Much thought went into its design. I like it so much I just ordered the Teton 3400.

    Great Investment for Casual Hiking/Camping

Awesome backpack, I had absolutely no problems with it on a 5 mile trip, roughly 60lbs. Was able to fit my Coleman palmetto sleeping bag in the sleeping bag compartment, even though it was a tight fit and I’d recommend just strapping it to the outside. Plenty of space on the inside and super durable construction. All of the adjusting straps were great and kept a good hold, very comfortable once it was adjusted. I opted for this one over the cheaper one and I’m glad I did, I needed all the space I could get. I get the feeling it will last for years, and for a beginner like me it’s a great investment.

A good, spacious and we'll built backpack.Weighed it down pretty well and then put it on, even with a bunch of weight the backpack can be adjusted to fit comfortably and the straps are very sturdy too so you don't have to worry about them ripping.Favorite thing about the pack are the quick open side pouches (perfect for preppers who want to put a handgun with extra magazine in) that open in a second without fumbling with the zippers, also the built in raincover is very convenient so you never have to worry about the rain ruining your supplies.

    Great Pack for TALL people!

I recieved this pack a few days ago and to be honest I was concerned that it wouldn't adjust to fit me. I am 6'3" tall and didn't see many reviews about Tall people. This pack more than adjusted to fit me, it had room to spare. I actually have it one notch below the max. The great thing about this pack is that my wife (5'4") can also wear the same pack and for that reason we will be ordering a second pack.Besides the height, I felt this pack was more than adequate for capacity. I read many reviews about the small sleeping bag pouch, but I was able to fit my summer bag(+40), tent, stakes, AND tent rainfly in the pouch with room to spare. I will just strap my tent poles on the side, which has straps specifically for that purpuse. I do have a LARGE winter bag which would be snug, but I would definitly strap that on the outside with all the extra straps this pack has. This pack has hidden pockets just about everywhere, which is nice when you have lots of gear you want to get at without unpacking everything.I started stuffing all my things in this pack to see what kind of balance it had and it felt great and was very sturdy. I posted a picture on here to see it on a tall person, but please note only had it 3/4 full. I will try and update this post after I use it on the Lake Superior Hiking Trail this fall.Let be honest though, the real reason I bought this pack was for the price... wow great pack for the money. You could almost compare this pack to a $300+ pack from REI. I hope that Teton keeps the price low and they will sell a TON of these.

This is a great backpack for the money. I went on a 4 day camping trip with my son and it held everything I needed. This included a small tent, a sleeping bag, clothes, cookware and utensils, first aid kit, flashlight, axe, shovel, water containers, (although it has an area for a camelback), knives, maps, and all the other bushcraft necessities such as cordage, fire making items, etc.I really like the easy to reach pockets in the top cover. It came in very handy and I didn't have to take everything out of the entire bag in order to retrieve the most used item. It also comes with it's own rain cover. It is also very durable and is comfortable on long hikes.I would buy another one and have shown and told my friends about this item.

I bought two of these packs for my husband and I. We enjoy camping and hiking, but they will also be our bug-out-bag as well. We could not be happier then we are about this product. Honestly there is more room then you really need with this pack but I do like that. There are tons of pockets and ways to attach gear to the pack. At the same time it is super easy to access anything you need through different openings. So you don't have to unpack your bag to get to items. Also this pack has a wide range of adjustment for people short and tall. And on the bottom side of the pack you will find a pouch seal shut with velcro. That is where you will find the built in rainfly

This is everything I'm going to need (and probably more) for multi-day hiking/camping. I'm 5'9" and the pack fit nicely and felt well balanced on my back. I haven't gotten to use it on the trail yet but I put my grandson in it (about 25 lbs) and carried him around no problem. He rather enjoyed that too. Lol After making all of the adjustments I could feel that the majority of the weight was being carried around my waist/hips with very little pressure around my neck and shoulders. I'm fairly confident I'll be able to carry this full on long hikes with very little discomfort. Probably the number one selling point for me, after the incredible price, is all of the outside pockets, they are a very handy feature. I did a lot of shopping around and research before I decided on this pack and when I finally received it my boyfriend liked it so much he also ordered one.

    Awesome pack, works great.

We purchased this unit for a trip to Peru, this was my pack. The bags had a solid metal structure, light but strong. Had plenty of storage sections on the outside. The top had a drawstring to torque it closed, the the very top flap snapped over and down, meaning no water could get in during rain. It would have to be submerged to get stuff inside wet.Adjustable back height made it fit much better for me, I am 6'3. It is too long/big of a pack for my wife, who is 5'6, so we got her the similar 3400 green version.I had it fully loaded and the shoulder straps plus the hip straps really helped spread the weight. I could go all day with it fully packed. Testament to an awesome pack or my staggering manliness, who knows.....Also, if you pack if full, wear it around a while and beat on it, the material will stretch and you can fit more stuff inside it, you just need to stretch out the material when new from factory. Both packs were in great shape AFTER our trip and we will get years more use out of them.

For the good quality it’s a reasonable price not paying big money for just a name brand backpack. This will do the job overseas and I’ll put it use soon as the coronavirus fades away. My pack ended up being close to fifty pounds at the beginning of the trip. The inner compartments are easy to access and there's enough outer pockets for all your quick access essentials.I thought it was plenty comfortable. I think any pack weighing fifty pounds will eventually cause some degree of discomfort over the course of a long day of hiking but I didn't feel the need to be making a lot of adjustments in search of comfort. The integrated rain cover came in handy and kept things dry.I would recommend this to anyone.

Might be too soon to tell, but the backpack is spacious and feels durable considering the price. I was worried that my sleeping bag wouldnt fit in the compartment after reading these reviews, but it fits just fine. I will likely be able to tuck away a small pillow in there as well.Update: went on a 4 mile test hike with 30 lbs in the pack. The squeak is real, but if you have an ounce of wit and creativity you will be able to find a simple solution to it. Other than that I think this pack performs its function to a satisfactory degree. However I am a novice, so take my review with a grain of salt (and pepper too if youre feeling bold).

Paid $75 for the 4000 65 liter green. Went through the rain, trees, thorn bushes and I am yet to damage the pack. I hike every single day, so it's loaded out at 48 lbs 24/7. I pick it up by one strap at least 4 times a day. I haul it out of the SUV and I constantly open and use the contents. Zippers, pockets, pouches and webbing are still working at 100%. I will be using this at sub zero temps soon. I will let you know how it works out.

    GREAT BAG!

You cannot go wrong with this bag!! Way cheaper than the big name brands. The only thing that makes this not as good as the big ticket ones is the hip belt is not quite as fancy. But considering the price difference, a great deal! Well made. lots of pockets. My REI down sleeping bag fits in the sleeping bag compartment. The adjustable torso deal is a great feature. Lots of straps to make even more adjustments. Compartment to hold up to a 3 ltr bladder. Straps to hold items on outside. Trekking poles fit nicely into areas behind side pockets. GREAT BAG!!**update**We still love our tetons. But i do want to add one thing we've noticed after using them on several trips. To adjust the tightness on the hip belt is nearly impossible to do yourself. The way the straps are designed you have to pull from center, back towards your hips. This is very hard to do... More expensive bags like gregory or ospray, you pull from hips forward which is a much more natural movement. I cannot tighten enough on my own and have to have my hubby tighten them for me due to the design.Otherwise, they are holding up great and we're taking them on a 5 day hike down the Rogue River in June.

I was using this pack with severe stenosis of lower spine and neck

Had to give up backpacking for travel, but that sucker could pack it! I am 5' tall and 60+ years old. Did not realize my arthitic back had become severely so, as the internal support and external straps and positioning were superb! Had a cop in Tuscon shake me down as if I was homeless because I had an out-of-state license and a huge back. I was traveling by train for long hops and then taking local masstrans to final destinations in area.I showed him my ticket stub, proving arrival that morning and return ticket for departure 10 days later. Out of stuff to try and corner me with, he turned to my pack sitting on the ground. He was about 6' 6" or better, medium boned, no gut, looked to be in his mid-30's. This cop tried to pick the pack up one-handed, and could not get it off the ground. He gave up and disgruntled backed off. I wrestled the pack onto a nearby bench, turned and put my arms through the straps, clipped the chest strap, gave a little hoist and snapped the hip padded belt, tightened the shoulder straps and walked away.

I'm liking this brand more and more.

About a year ago I bought one of teton's tracker +5 mummy sleeping bags. I did a lot of research for it, trying to find the best balance of material quality, warmth, weight/size and price. When it comes to camping/hiking equipment things can get VERY expensive quickly. I was surprised at how good the sleeping bag turned out (being that it only cost about $80) and how many small, quality touches were added. That led me to this backpack when the time came to upgrade to a larger one. I find the same attention to detail, small quality touches and reasonable pricing in this bag. Good camping/hiking equipment is durable and multifunctional. I look for things that will hold up in harsh conditions and be customizable to my needs. This pack had several easily accessible, and large, outer pockets with tru-holes for long things like poles or hatchets. It's highly adjustable in terms of how the pack sits against your body. It's a bit top heavy, but that's more due to the size of the pack and the way I pack it. I can easily get 50lbs of gear into the pack, without even utilizing all available loops and straps on the outside. I can fit a 2 person tent, 5inch thick sleeping pad, 5 degree mummy bag, camping folding chair, poncho/waterproof pants, full change of clothes, 3 days of food/water, water purification equipment, medical supplies, hatchet/saw and various other camping necessities (like flashlights, fire making equipment, knives and rope). It would take too long to list everything that fits, but that's the bigger items. It has enough room to pack anything I'd need to live in the woods for 3-5 days without resupply. I'm hardly an expert at packing and I'm sure others could go a lot longer off the space available. I could easily see Teton pricing this bag at $200+ and it's a great deal as is. Between the sleeping bag and the backpack, Teton has earned my future business. You can buy better equipment than what they have to offer, but I doubt you could find equipment this good for this cheap. It's a balanced backpack.

    Great for Boy Scouts

This bag is great for my 11yr old son starting out in Boy Scouts. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a bag that he might not want in a few years so this is perfect. He loves it and it has loads of room with different compartments where he can store his toiletries and things he needs everyday. There are 2 things that are really aren’t too much of an issue. He can’t roll the sleeping bag small enough to get into the sleeping bag compartment but he can attach it to the outside of the backpack. The other thing is that because of the way the backpack is constructed everything is packed in from the top & my son doesn’t bother to reach down into the bottom of the bag to get his things. It’s not like a suitcase where it opens all the way. But it’s just that he’s an 11yr old boy and too lazy to bother to get everything out and/or too busy with everything going on in camp. Other than those 2 things which are not really even issues the bag is perfect.

I purchased this backpack for a recent 5 day/ 4 night hiking-camping trip in the Grand Canyon. The pack was roomy; plenty of room for a sleeping bag, hydration bladder food, clothing etc. on the inside. Three zippered pockets, two mesh pockets and plenty of straps to lash my tent and extra items to the pack on the outside. It was easy to adjust and to put on and take off.It held up well during the trip without any noticeable defects or failures. I highly recommend this product.

Best Hiking Pack for the Money - Buy if youre on the fence

This pack has done very well for me. I did not want to spend hundreds of dollars on a top level bag like Osprey so I bought this one. The material is very strong and holds up on long hikes. This pack can compete with the most expensive packs that my friends have. Only complaint is the bottom compartment where I put the sleeping bag, the zipper is sometimes hard to open/close. Other than that, everything is perfect. Great value and has lasted many back country trips.

    Not just for hiking.

I ordered this to use as my emergency bug out bag. I had it in my cart for months just waiting on best price and best time. So glad I finally ordered it for my self for Mother's Day. I fitted it, and packed it and have been walking around with it to build up my endurance. I have back problems so it was especially important to have a well fitting, puts the weight on the hips pack for me. This one did not disappoint and was well worth going to the extra expense. I was looking for something with lots of external pockets and this is it. It has dry area, (lower back pocket) that easily accommodated my -40 sleeping bag. Attachments for self-inflating mat, and for the three man tent I carry to accommodate my service dog and the cats if we have to bail in a hurry due to fire, food, hurricane, whatever. This might even have me brave enough to try an overnight hike with the dog, something I have dared do since becoming injured in a motorcycle accident. I used to love my boy scout leader trips with the troop.

Perfect for Backpacking - Better Than the "Big Name" Brands

When I started backpacking, I knew I need to get a good pack that would distribute the weight evenly and be comfortable to carry over miles through mountain trails. I spent a lot of time researching all different bags and even going to REI to try some on. I wasn't happy with the fit of any of the "big name" brands and the prices were INSANE. I decided I'd try the Teton Explorer before dropping $$$$ on a different bag, and I am SO glad I did! This bag is AMAZING. Somehow it made my 30 pounds of camp gear feel like 5. There are so many different ways/straps to custom fit the bag to you. I love the multiple pockets on the outside of the bag so you can place gear that you want to have easy access to. I also love the included rainfly - - really comes in handy during the freak mountain rainstorms! There is PLENTY of space for multi-day backpacking. I recently hiked with a friend that has an Osprey bag, and he couldn't believe how much more comfortable my Teton was. The straps are THICK and have tons of padding. As a plus-size woman, I had no issues with any of the straps fitting properly.All-in-all, if you are looking to upgrade to a bigger/better bag, or don't want to spend $$$$, this is the perfect bag!

Much better than a duffle bag!!!

It's my 3rd year in Boy Scouts as a parent leader. This pack is serving me very well. We've done many hikes and campouts and this bag is holding up great. It has enough storage for water bottles, and does have an area for a camel back water bladder, I just don't own one yet. Zippers are well made. Which is important because at the bottom is the compartment to fit your sleeping bag. I'm able to fit my mummy bag IN the small compartment. I never thought I'd be able to do that until a friend showed me. Once I place the compression bag into the compartment, I zip it up on each side until they meet in the middle. It keeps it secure. My clothes do fit in the top section. I like the various straps on the rear. I strap on my tent AND ground pad when we need to do a hike/camp out.Inside are two thick aluminum bars to provide enough rigidity to keep the bag straight. But, you can actually bend these to contour your body. This bag is adjustable for the straps to fit you properly. You can get this pack on your hips in order to distribute the weight and allow you to walk without feeling a lot of the weight on your back. This pack also has a cover at the bottom that can be opened and used to cover the entire pack. It's colored bright yellow to be used in a search and rescue situation.I am VERY pleased with this bag.

I bought this to replace an old external frame from my scouting days. I use this now with my son on his scouting campouts when we both go. It has plenty of space for all of the requirements and some extras. A wisely packed person will find this to be more than enough for many campouts. I looked it over and found no issues with zippers or seams. The adjustment for height was ample for my mid-sized frame. My son wants it, but he has his own now as well, so Hands off, this one is MINE!

For Webelo camping with son--and so far to life scout.

I am updating this review to tell you how great the customer service is. I cannot add stars because it was already 5 stars. My Boy Scout son has had this backpack for 4.5 years. It had survived 6 rugged weekend campouts and a summer camp per year as well as trips to Grandpa etc. This year the the chest strap mysteriously came off of one side (probably while crammed into a trailer and got caught on something when vigorously pulled.) I emailed customer service just asking to buy the part--they emailed me back asking me to send a picture of the whole pack and the area of the missing part. It took me a while to get around to that but once I did I got an email back within hours that the part was on its way--no charge. That is better service and easier than the warranty service that I received from a well known retailer in Maine for a school backpack that cost almost as much as this hiking backpack. We bought this for a father son Webelo scouts camping/hiking trip. My husband may never go again other than this requirement so we wanted to go as inexpensive as possible and still meet the needs. It met his needs well for the 6 mile/overnight then back trip. We continue to use it as a "bag" for our younger child's cub scout family campouts (about 6 of them) but really only carry it from the car to the tent. Even though a small part did break after 4.5 years the response time for replacement part was instant. Since the original review I have purchased one for my younger scout and also for a struggling parent of another scout. This is definitely the pack to buy if you are interested in excellent price, great quality, and excellent customer service!!!!!! They should also consider renaming or making a larger pack in this series to Eagle and then we would be forced to upgrade when my son earns his next rank lol.

Solid pack at an amazing price!

Wow! I have to admit that I was a little skeptical when I saw the price ($55 for the green/black model when I bought it), but I knew that I did NOT want to spend a ton of money for something I'll use at most a couple times a year. I need something that's tough enough, large enough, versatile enough, and practical enough to use backpacking or for overnight trips. For the few times I've used this pack so far, it has absolutely fit the bill. When full, it sits comfortably, even after hauling about 35 lbs around in it for 5-6 hours. It doesn't have loads of room inside, but I count that as a good thing, otherwise I know I'd be tempted to overpack. It should have just the right amount of space for 4-5 days, if I pack smart. The material, padding, and zippers all seem tough and not likely to fail on me when I need them. There are enough pockets, loops, and the like to be versatile. I especially like the lid, which has a double pouch: one is accessible from the bottom of the lid (when open), and the other from the top. It's big enough for those things you need to grab in a hurry on a hike: raingear, trail lunch, headlamp, first aid kit, and the like. The side pockets are very roomy. I was even able to fit a medium-sized plastic bowl and mug in the large side pocket pocket. The bottom compartment is perfect for a sleeping bag--it worked pretty well with my bag just rolled up, but with my bag in a compression sack, I can fit everything I need for sleeping in that bottom compartment. If you want to use the tool loops for trekking poles, you'll need something to attach them to the bag higher up. I made some webbing out of shock cord ($5 total for the cord and a toggle) between the two daisy chain sets of loops on the front. I haven't used this configuration outdoors yet, but I'm hoping it will do the trick not only for my poles, but also for anything else I may want to stick in there. The side pockets have a pass-through space behind them--for tent poles or anything else long--, but it's not very useful if you need to access those items on the trail, especially if the pockets are full. I'm sure it would be fine if you stuck your tent poles in there, then loaded up the pockets, and didn't need to touch the poles until you got to camp again, but it's a real pain to get things in and out of there with the pockets full. But that's a very minor thing. Are there better packs out there? Sure. Is the difference worth $150-$250? I can't imagine it is! So, overall, I'm extremely pleased with this bag. There are lots of YouTube reviews of this pack, and the consensus is that it's a tough and very useful pack, and you absolutely can't beat the price. I completely agree!

    Great starter pack

Great starter pack. I was able to fit a lot of stuff in here and it has so many pockets. I am 5’3 and 110 lbs, I adjusted the pack to the smallest size on the back height and the waist straps and it fit me perfectly, but if I was any smaller it would’ve probably been too big. My boyfriend had this same pack and he is 6’0 and 170 lbs. He adjusted it to the large back size and it was perfect on him as well. We took enough stuff for 5 days and 4 nights and still had room left in the packs. Only complaint I have is both my boyfriend and I took Nalgenes and they were a little hard to put into the side pockets. One side pocket on my boyfriends ripped a little. I ended up using carabiners to hook them on the front just to make it easier.

I want to start with how AWESOME Teton sports customer service is

**Update 11/9/2018**The more I get to use this pack the more I like it. The stays are easily shaped to your back (aluminum I believe) and hold that shape well. I have since swapped out my 40 degree bag for a 20 degree mummy style bag. That DID take the ENTIRE bag compartment, and in turn I had to move all my other gear around and pack it differently. Still to me a non issue. I have it loaded (full weight including food and water) to about 35 pounds. That is including a few luxury items. The weight rides great, and even with the tent strapped to the outside it feels OK to me. Again like someone else mentioned, its really in how you pack your bag. The torso adjustment is easy to figure out (its just a hook and loop system) and it stays in place when you get it done where you want it.If I had to say anything that I am not a fan of, it would have to be the pockets on the sides. At first I liked having pockets split up for organization purposes but now, it seems to be more....fiddly... for lack of a better term. Right now I just use the lower of the two pockets to hold a couple of water bags collapsed. Also maybe the inclusion of some belt pockets would be cool, but for the cost of this model I still love it.Still I think you can't go wrong with a pack like this.Original review belowGrab a drink this review is a bit lengthy.I want to start with how AWESOME Teton sports customer service is. When my bag arrived it had a tear on the shoulder straps/yoke-harness. It was right where the height adjustment was located. I contacted Teton about a day after I received the pack and had a chance to inspect it. That was on a weekend. At the beginning of the week I heard back from them requesting just a bit more info and within a week or so I received a new shoulder strap. Things happen, that could have been just a simple oversight. The rest of the pack was rock solid. Now speaking of the pack...This pack is awesome. I got this so I could stop relying on a generic "3 day pack"; that I used for overnight camping without much hiking and that was good for the money, but had its fair share of fit and finish issues. Plus weight distribution was just terrible. No frame and I could tell it just wasn't going to be anything I wanted to carry on any future serious hike. This pack on the other hand is great. Holds an amazing amount of supplies, and the sleeping bag area fits my 40 degree bag (really, really, really scrunched up -probably not good for the filling, oh well) a camp pillow, a bag liner, a medium size first aid kit that has more heavy use/major injury stuff (my boo boo kit is in my pocket), a small Gerber Gorge folding shovel, and tent stakes. The weight distribution with this pack and a lot of packs this style ultimately depends on how you pack your bag. However with the two frame rods supporting the back, and the design packing this thing and feeling balanced is easy. I have 2-3 days worth of food and 3.5 liters of water in it and the pouches along with a 2 person backpacking tent, a change of clothes, and other small items that I wanted to add. I still have enough space to stuff a rain coat if I wanted to, or more food. I have it weighing in around 35 pounds (including water and food). It fits fantastic, rides fantastic, and overall impresses the heck outta me.I want to say that this is my first true hiking backpack, but I am pleased with it. Plus at the price......its a freaking steal.

AWESOME PACK. Very versatile and can not beat it for the price. Great for lightweight backpacking

I'm an avid day hiker but wanted to get into the world of multi-day hiking/backcountry camping. I bought this inexpensive pack a year ago and have used and abused it in the heat AND rain. I'm a 5'9" 155 lb male and this pack fits me perfectly when adjusted properly. When I knew it was going to rain one night I dressed it with the included raincover and left it on a large rock outside my tent. My paper map was still in the mesh pocket. It rained HEAVILY and everthing -- much to my surprise -- was still DRY. I was impressed! It fits everything I need for extended trips and would trust it for a 5-7 day 3 season trip. It has a separator which divides the bags main compartment from the sleeping bag however I recommend unzipping it and using the whole pack as one huge gear dump because everything just fits more nicely that way and compacts much easier. Love the side pockets to store my water filter, stove/pot/ and snacks. I wish it had waist pockets though for easier access to things like a camera or snacks. I also love that it has top and bottom straps (it can strap down my tent on top and my thermarest on the bottom w/ no problem which makes for even more space inside). Two bottle pockets on each side make it very convenient for easy access to water bottles. Can easily fit a 32oz bottle on each side (nice when hiking in dry environment where water is sparse) It also has a compartment inside to house a bladder up to 3L i believe. I would easily buy this pack again when mine gives up on me. SO FAR ive had not one tear/rip or malfunction, however the zippers are a bit stubborn but easy to get used to. A much inexpensive, quality, alternative to the $200+ packs at REI. GREAT FOR BEGINNERS. I was so impressed with the bag that I ordered a Teton Sports Trailhead 20F degree sleeping bag which fits perfectly in the sleeping bag compartment.Pros:All the room.So many pockets.Top AND Bottom strapsRugged and can take abuseVery inexpensiveRemovable sleeping bag compartment separator/dividerIncluded raincover does an amazing jobWorth more than it isVery adjustable to various body types/sizesCons:Sometimes stubborn zippersNo waist/hip belt pockets for easy access to snacks/camera

Great pack at a great price. Left no sores from rubbing/poking, and was easy to adjust

I took this on my trip down to Havasupai, and it was perfect. Adjusting the straps was really easy, even while hiking, and that made it really easy to re-position the weight from my hips to shoulders or vice versa as I needed it. I was unable to escape the trip without really having any sore shoulders, hips, or back, it did a good job of not rubbing/jabbing into me, and it had good padding. The multiple pockets/compartments made it easy to pack and organize everything I needed, including a 3L water bladder (which I would highly recommend using for longer hikes). I didn't realize it when I bought this, but it comes with a rain cover that packs into the bottom of the pack too, which we ended up needing twice, so that was an extra plus for me. The only thing that wasn't ideal was that the side pockets became tight and hard to unzip/reach into if you filled them up too much, but as long as you pack well and leave some space in them, it isn't a problem.

    Amazing backpack

This pack has been great and i'm amazed at how good it was for the cost. I've used this on a couple backpacking trips so far. This thing has held up great and i'm confindent it will hold up for many more. Has lots of good features not seen in other backpacks in this price range. Fits great and the adjustable height straps really helps you nail down the best comfort level. the pockets on the sides are left open at the back so you can store longer items behind them. This is perfect for fishing poles or even a small rifle. The pack has plenty of straps and tie down options to secure your gear which really helps balance out your load. Both trips i've taken this pack on it was loaded with around 50lbs of gear. It had no problems storing and holding that sort of weight. The sleeping bag compartment is a little small for most sleeping bags especially a cold weather bag, fortunately the top of the compartment unzips to create one large opening so you aren't stuck using the seperated compartment. I would absolutely recommend this pack to ANYONE.

I was able to grab this up for about $57.00. This will be well worth the investment. It says it retails for almost $150. I have not used it yet but can't wait to! Unfortunately because I haven't used it I can give any details on how it will hold up when exposed to the elements. As for my first impression this appears to be of excellent quality. The fabric is made with ripstop "technology" which if I'm right is to prevent one small hole from ripping across & shredding the bag. I got the green & the add rain guard is orange in color which is just another added bonus should u want your bag to stick out. I purposely bought the dark green so even if/when it gets dirty it won't appear that way & bother me so much!

Good backpack for a good price.

Bought the pack for a teenage and now that he has had a chance to put the pack through its paces, time to give a review.Initial Impressions: Good sturdy material and decent quality construction. A little smaller than expected, but I believe there is a larger version of the pack available.Packing: The pack can filled from the top and from the front zippered area. There is no divider between the upper and lower section of the pack, so when you pull something out of the zippered area, it is really hard to get it back in without laying the pack down on the ground. Side pockets area reasonably sized, but another pocket on the main area would be really handy. 3 pockets just aren't quite enough. On The Trail: Although this was initially purchased for my child, I did have the opportunity to carry the pack with about 35 lbs of weight for about 3 miles. I found the fit of the pack to be very comfortable and the loading to be mainly on the hips where it should be. The padded waist strap did not cut or leave sore spots. (This was also the case with my child, who used it for over 25 miles.)Overall: Good pack for a great price.

    Spacious, durable, and affordable

I′ve taken my Explorer 4000 on several outdoor hikes and camping trips to get a real feel for it before reviewing it, and I′ve found a lot of pro′s and a few con′s to be had. It breaks down like this:-Durability: The stitching is excellent, the nylon has held up to plenty of scrapes in the brush, and even with the pack fully loaded, there′s no seams coming undone or buckling. The straps have all held up well without tears either.-Capacity: The main bag has quite a bit of room, but only one pocket inside for a water bladder. It was a bit tricky running the thick hose head through the hole in the pack but it worked out and it functioned just fine on the trail. The outer bag compartments aren′t very big, so I used them to hold some small things I wanted to quickly access. The 2022 model has two small zipper pouches on either side of the waist belt, perfect for holding snack bars ans a small knife and flashlight. The top bag compartments are small but perfect for fitting little tools and other items you want to grab without opening the whole thing up. The bottom of the bag has a zippered, sectioned off compartment you can choose to make accessible from the inside of the bag, which is handy if you're going to store a really long sleeping blanket.-Customization: The shoulder straps are fully adjustable to your height and shoulders; it only took a few minutes for me to get comfortably dialed in to the right configuration for me. The waist belt can accommodate a wide range of body types and the extra strap length tucks away nicely. The pack also has a few anchor points to hang things off of it or buckle onto it, albeit not as much as a a pack with Molle webbing.-Water resistance: The included rain cover at the bottom of the pack worked wonderfully turning a heavy shower, even with a small bag strapped to the back. It didn't completely cover the sides which got a bit wet, but checking the bag compartments the pack′s water resistant design kept the contents dry.-How it carries: As other reviewers pointed out, the design of the back is not going to completely get rid of the back sweat. There′s more air flow thanks to the channels carved out, but it's not enough. With everything sinched tight the pack contents didn't move around much even with it fully loaded. The straps never felt like they were digging in and the pack excellently balanced load distribution between my hips and shoulders while walking so even with 30lb of weight it felt quite manageable.I do wish it had more internal pockets, but I made do with using storage cubes to organize things inside. The outer bag compartments could be a bit larger, especially the one right on the back I used to put my work gloves; but it′s already hard to fit water bottles on the bottom of the sides of the bags so that would require a complete rework. Overall, I can highly recommend this bag for beginner hikers and people looking for a solid bug out bag that′s more comfortable than the typical $30-40 budget bags that flood this site. This bag is what you want when you want to carry a lot, as the internal frame and proper weight distribution don′t stress any one part of your body too much. The company from what I hear also has good longer term customer service, so if I ever need to use that I definitely will update this review with those results.

Great fit, well built, nice features

I have hiked only about 15 miles with it so far, so it has not been put fully to the test yet. Nonetheless, I find it comfortable to wear and spacious. The padding on the back works very well. I do not get "sweaty back" wearing the pack. The weight sits on your pelvis and does not hang from your shoulders (if fitted properly). It seems to be very well built. It is rugged and tough. Regarding the sleeping bag compartment (the bottom), I can squeeze my 3.5lb bag along with my camp pillow into it. A heavier bag might not fit, but there is a solution if it does not. The "ceiling" of that compartment unzips which basically turns the pack into one large compartment. Remove this and stuff you big heavy bag into it.It claims to be hydration ready, let me tell you what that really means. It means that there is a small velcro loop in the bag to hang a hydration bladder inside the pack, and there is a small hole to run the hose out of the pack. There is no special compartment for the bladder, it just lays in your pack along with all your other stuff. The side pockets seem to be form fitted to a 32oz water bottle. Some of the zippers are a bit awkward, but I find no serious flaws at all. It is a serious backpackers bag, but at a great price. Highly recommended.

    Big Awesome Pack

Great pack for when you need to pack for a long trip. Very comfortable and durable. The side pockets are great for storing your water filter, snacks or other items you may need to access during the day. The sleeping bag compartment is almost big enough to hold a bear canister sideways (I had to put it in vertically). The description says the pack is 5 pounds but mine weighs 5.5 according to my scales. But if you are buying a pack this size it's not saving a few ounces it that big of a deal.I have not had it out in the rain yet to say how waterproof it is or how the pack cover preforms but like any gear that may stand to get wet, use some spray silicone on it just to be safe.

Well made pack. Holds more than I will probably carry but I filled it up and walked around my neighborhood and it is super comfortable. My sleeping bag is huge and was surprised I could even get it in the bottom pouch. I will likely leave the bottom compartment open instead of struggling on a trip re-stuffing it back in there all the time. Wish it had easy access pouches in the front but I will add some. I love it for what I paid and how well it is made. I watch three review videos on it so I know it is a popular choice, I can see why and I am not disappointed. It is heavy pack and probably not Best Choice for something like the PCT, AT or CDT even though it is super comfortable with a sturdy frame. No more hunching over or suffering neck strain like with the frameless Molly I had.

Super comfortable and tons of space, if you don't have a huge sleeping bag

Changing my review from 2-4 stars after using this bag for a bit and putting it to the test. My biggest original complaints were;1 - The top hood doesn't fit over the bag (like it does in the product photo).2 - The inside diameter was a bit tight.3 - The bottom pouch was difficult to access, due to the design of the bag.4 - The straps on top of the bag sit a little far back, making anything that's strapped to the top (if it has weight to it) feel like it's constantly falling off. However, after packing this thing to the brim, plus some added weights (prepping for a big hike coming up and was trying to over compensate for food and such), it held up incredibly.1 - The top actually works as a satisfactory cover, as long as you don't expect it to snugly pull down over a full bag. Since every square inch of this thing is made for storage, I'm filling the pocket in the hood with a ton of stuff and it still does its job.2 - This is something that still might be an issue. I WAS able to get my HUGE sleeping bag in and out of it, but I also upgraded to a smaller mummy bag and it fits significantly better. If you're a big person, that uses a big sleeping bag, especially one designed for colder weather, be prepared to struggle packing everything, even with compression bags.3 - The bottom pouch zipper is significantly easier to use when it's full, so make sure to utilize every square inch of this space.4 - As for the top straps, it's pretty easy to get use to, especially if you're only putting a light sleeping mat up there. I have a pretty light weight tent that I've rolled up and strapped to the top, which can get annoying if you're spinning around a lot and the top hood isn't full, but otherwise it's solid.Overall, this bag has an ENORMOUS amount of space; I have enough extra room to pack my tent as a "just in case" option, for a trip where I'll be sleeping in shelters along the trail. It's also surprisingly comfortable, even with the added 10-15 lbs that I packed into it, I had no problem with weight shifting or this bag throwing me around. The only big drawback being how slim the interior is, but I think that can easily be worked around. 4 stars, because I think this bag doesn't quite knock it out of the park for me, but is definitely super solid.

Great frame backpack for beginner or intermediate hiker

I am no expert on frame backpacks but I know this one solves all problems I had. I also don't care about ultra light hiking/camping so can't speak to that either but the only Con I can think of is the mesh pocket on the right where I'd love to put a water bottle, the storage compartment above it will block easy use of that so I'd leave it empty. Other than that, this thing has enough storage for anything could possible want to bring.

New Hiker used for GA section of AT

My only con might be weight distribution however I got some advice at mountain crossings on how to wear pack and the comfort improved. With food and Max water probably had close to 50 lb pack weight. No issues with pack. Used the exterior loops for tent and foam pad. Bought a larger rain cover for the external load and changed it out with the supplied cover. Pockets worked great. Plenty of room and will probably use for my next hike. No need to upgrade. As a note, saw a few others using this pack or the 3400 Teton scout? The other hikers seemed to like the pack as well.

    Sturdy

Multiple compartments and zipper pockets to store water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray for quick access. Even has a slot to slip in my hiking trek poles! Tons of space inside the backpack for a weekend camping trip, camping sleeping bags and a tent. I'm 5'2" female athletic build and it was well more than enough space to carry what I needed, I'm pretty sure this will work very well unisex and up to a very tall male as the back metal supports [x2] can extend based on your height and pack comfort level. It has a small back compartment for the waterpaks and hole to slip the water sipper/tube through, pretty standard. The rain covering for the backpack on the bottom of the backpack came in very handy when we hiked. I did a ton of research prior to purchasing this hiking pack. Overall, I paid for what I got. Quality!

Great pack, great price, do reccomend.

I used this pack on a multiday Pemigewasset Loop in the white mountains of New Hampshire, as did my hiking companion. And it held up beautifully, it still looks new. Very comfortable on the shoulders while doing long days with heavy loads. I was carrying about 40lbs, we did a 15+mile day from Lincoln woods over the Lafayette ridge to a Garfield shoulder, it was 75 at altitude the pack breathes well I never felt my back being "hot"We also experienced 60mph winds and rain later in the hike, the rain fly stayed put and none of the bags contents got wet, even with light rain and no fly. I am not saying waterproof, but resistant yes.My only issue was the sleeping bag compartment is a bit tight, I was using a teton sleeping bag in compression sack, and it was still a squeeze, but it did fit. hence my 4 star on storage.I have already recommended this pack to others

Great Pack for the Weekend Warrior

I bought this pack in 2018. I have used it on six backpacking trips so far and it is hard to beat for the price. A few observations: As others have stated the pack cover is a touch too small for the bag. It won't reach around to completely cover the sides if the bag is full. My wife has the Scout 3400 and her rain cover fits much better. I almost think they use the same cover for both packs but the Explorer 4000 is a bit bigger so it doesn't quite fit. That said, I always use a pack liner anyway so it really hasn't been a big deal. I've been in the rain with it on a couple trips and the coverage that the cover does offer along with the pack liner has kept my gear dry. It did take me a little while to dial in the adjustments. You do need to cinch down the waist belt fairly tight to keep the weight riding on your hips instead of your shoulders. Once I got that all figured out, the pack has been pretty comfortable with 25 to 30 lbs in it. The zipper for the sleeping bag compartment is small but to be honest your best bet is to just unzip the internal divider and make it into one large compartment. Especially if you are using a pack liner like I do, you are going to want to stuff your sleeping bag down into that anyway. When you set up camp, you are pretty much taking everything out of your pack so I never saw the need to have a separate compartment for my sleeping bag. So far the pack has held up perfectly. Nothing has torn, zippers still work like new and all of the stitching has held up great. The same holds true for my wife's Scout 3400. The materials and construction on both packs are pretty much the same and her pack is holding up just as well. For the typical "weekend warrior" 2 to 3 day trip, it is a great backpack.

Used it once so far, good first impression. Used it for a week long camp, added one molle pouch for storage. Very good Boy Scouts pack. Adjustable is a big plus. Same pack can fit 13yr old or an adult.Update: I have used this pack for a couple years now, put a lot of trips and a lot of miles on it. I has held up well and several of the boys in the troop have the same pack. If you are looking for a pack for someone in Boy Scouts, this one will do a good job for them. I prefer a smaller "daypack" for weekends, but that is personal preference. It is big enough for a week trip, has proven to be durable, is adjustable, and isn't crazy expensive. Is it perfect? Nope. None are. But this is a good pack. Hope that helps someone out there.

This backpack works great for me! It has multiple size adjustments, and when worn properly, is really comfortable to hike with. It is a pretty big bag, so make sure you don’t get too overzealous packing it as the lbs add up quickly! It seems pretty durable and I haven’t had any issues with it in that regard. If it loosens up while wearing it, I have noticed it squeaks a little bit, but it is easily remedied by tightening the fit back up.

Built like a tank and for the money blows the expensive brands away!

I just received this so I do not know after use I will still think it is 5 stars, that being said my initial impression is that this is a quality pack that looks tough as nails. I see this lasting a long time, the material is thick and looks like it will take a beating. The harness padding is very thick and feels like it will stay fairly comfortable all day. The pack looks like I could pack more than 65 liters, its roomy and I like the outside pouch sizes. Like others that commented the sleeping bag compartment feels small but I managed to stuff my large army cold weather mummy sleeping bag in there. I wouldn't be able to get the whole system in (hot and cold weather bags and gortex shell) but that doesn't bother me at all. I can always use the main compartment if needed. The zippers are very heavy duty and it looks like there will be no issues with snagging. This obviously is not a $300 Osprey pack but I would trust this pack to hold up better. It is not flashy but will get the job done and has a lifetime warranty to boot.

Ready for a hiking adventure. Packed Full of Features

I am planning a hiking trip later this fall and have been looking for a good pack to use. I finally settled on this pack and so far I am pleased with it! It holds a lot of stuff! I really like all the compartments, it makes organization easy. I also value the weather sealed zippers on the outside pouches. The top (lid) has two compartments which I find useful for books and tools and other items I plan on using soon. The map pouch is big enough for me though you cannot stick too much in there because it doesn't stretch much. The construction of the pack feels very rugged. I will update after my hiking trip on its durability. The cinching straps are very useful and I like that they are on the top and the bottom. I carried a blanket and mat and towel wrapped up and cinched down with these straps. It distributes the weight very nicely and fits my body very well. I took out the metal supports and bent them to match my back and that made the pack even better. I am 6.0 and 180 and this pack fits me perfectly. I am very excited to use this pack for the intended purpose. both sides of the outer pouches are sewn so you can slide in tall items (poles, axes, rifles, etc.) which is a very thoughtful and useful addition to this pack. I also like that I can access my items from the bottom sleeping bag compartment via the zipper. the included rain fly is also a useful tool. Overall I am happy with the pack and at this price I couldn't resist.

We used ours on a 10 mile hike through the woods. We were able to pack all the essentials for 2 days in the field and then some. I do recommend quality dry bags for stored items. If rain is a concern, it has a built-in rain shroud that covers the whole pack and stows back underneath. We've had great luck with it and it's held up well. It's also very easy to adjust.

Its definitely not a high end pack but its working nicely as an occasional use pack for camping and weekends away from home. The pockets are nicely laid out. Ample space for anything you would need in a 72 hour pack. The built in rain cover is a nice touch. The straps are adjustable and very comfortable. The pack is easy to wear. The only thing I don't like is the pouch for the hydration bladder is in a weird spot and you will have to unpack the bag to get to it. Definitely not convenient. Other than that it's a great light use pack.

Great adjustable and affordable backpack. Got this for my boyfriend's first backpacking trip. At first he struggled with weight distribution, but once we adjusted his straps he was very comfortable. we went ~10 miles total. He's 6'2" 220 lb with a longer torso, so it was hard to find an adjustable backpack that would fit his torso length. This backpack was one of the few I found that would fit him. had great reviews, and was affordable.I myself have a Gregory backpack, but I actually really liked his backpack because it has so many side pockets that were useful for little items and items you need to be able to retrieve easily. The green color was also beautiful. Just overall a great backpack for a great price. We will just have to see about durability as we take it out for more trips.

I’ve actually used this pack for over a year now. I can’t say enough great things about it. At a 5 lb pack it’s not the lightest pack on the planet but for the price I’m not complaining! Depending on what kind of trip I’m taking I generally pack out between 35-45 lbs and the Explorer 4000 handles it with easy! Everything on the pack works just like the day I got it.

    Great quality and comfort.

I love the extra pockets on the side, some of the other bags I looked at didn't have those. I loaded this up to aboutb35 lb for a day hike and even though I was sweating from the uphills (because I am out of shape) the airflow at my back was pretty good. I didn't have that big sweat mark on my back like I had with other bags. I was able to adjust the packs ride height and that made a world of difference. In all a great pack for the price. Also love the rain fly just incase the weatherman gets the day wrong.

Perfect fit for small frame... barely, but amazing!

First: if you are on the fence, I did not fit the Teton Scout. I am 5'10", Male, Slight frame, 30" waist, and my torso is longer that average for my height. For the record: any smaller of a waist and I would not fit the pack. I have the waist strap pulled as tight as it can go.I have only gone a few miles so far, but once I messed with all the settings everything fit amazing.Pack seems well made and is larger that I anticipated, but that is a good thing.AMAZING DEAL for the money.Easily fits and carries my 30# of gear. including my huge sleeping bag (the bottom compartment was a little small so I unzipped the zipping divider and just used the internal cinch divider).Only minus is that it does not come with any instructions.... took a little while to figure out how to adjust things.

Easily fits enough gear for any Scout weekend camping trip. Large shoulder straps efficiently distributes the weight for a comfortable trek to the campsite. Zippers are a bit snug, but with use they should smooth out.

    ALMOST a great backpack!

This pack is durable, has a great organizational system with plenty of pockets, and even includes a rainfly. Once I started field-testing it prior to a backpacking trip, however, I ended up purchasing the Osprey Atmos AG 65. Despite the many great features of this pack, I knew I wouldn't make it through a 9-day backpacking trip. The hip belt is well-padded and the shoulder straps are reasonably comfortable, but after a couple of hours with a loaded pack my neck began to hurt. The biggest issue I had is that the waist belt is not adjustable on the fly, which means that one needs to stop and hand-thread the belt to adjust it, which is just not acceptable during a hike. Price-wise, this pack blows everything else out of the water, having more features than bags 2 or 3 times the cost. This backpack hasn't gone to waste, though, and I decided to hang onto it. It would work extremely well as a bug-out-bag. When I pick up trash along the trails, I line this with a heavy duty trash bag. I've fashioned a bag holder from a coat hanger and hang the bag from a D-ring on the chest strap as I pick up trash. After I fill smaller bags, I drop them into this pack as I go. I also use this bag when I car camp.If Teton Sports would modify this bag so that the waist belt could be adjusted on the fly by just bending over and pulling on the straps, they could add $40 or $50 to the price and still have a winner!

    Awesome pack!

I love this backpack. The side pouches are perfect for organizing the little odds and ends such as first aid supplies, fire kits, hygiene items, etc. that I always want to keep extra handy. The bottom storage leaves "holes" on the side (inside, not outside...) when the inner flap is zipped up so you could easily pack tent poles, etc.inside the bag. The outer mesh pockets on the bottom are large enough for my wide mouth nalgene bottle except that the pouch on the one side hangs a little low to put a tall bottle on that side. The additional strapping and included cover put this over the top and why I'm giving it 5 stars.

This pack is AWESOME for the price.

This thing isn't as stylish or as lightweight as some of the name brand internal frame packs, but it's pretty awesome and comparable...and much cheaper.I moved and carried my whole life in and on this pack for a week or so and it performed great.I've owned it for two years and used it a ton for trips and as a gear sack for driving trips and it's still holding up like new.I wish it had a few more sturdy straps to attach gear, but what it has is definitely good enough. The sleeping bag pouch is a little small for a normal 0-20 degree sack, so I just leave the divider unzipped and carry one either stuffed inside or attached on the outside. The side pockets and flap pockets are great for snacks and gear that needs to be accessible. The mesh side pockets are perfect for anything with the circumference of a 32oz Nalgene bottle or smaller.

Best 'Bang for the Buck' backpack on the market

Bought this on a budget and I have been pleasantly surprised. I wasn't expecting it to be as durable as it is but it has performed well with everthing I've thrown at it. I have over-packed, over-stuffed, scraped against trees in it, just about everything you can do that it wasn't designed for and so far has held up extremely well. It accepts abuse as well as any military issue I've owned and I love the pockets and compartment on this thing. So far- a great product.

Great pack and even better company!

I'm a big guy, 6'1" 260 pounds with a 21.5" torso length, and a 44" waist. This pack fits although the chest strap will be too tight come winter when I have to layer up. This pack is well made and comfortable to wear and it's large size is perfect for multiple day outings with my dog. If you utilize the attachment straps on the top and bottom you could easily use this pack for a camping trip that lasted a week or longer, depending on the gear you take. I can pack a Naturehike 3P 3 person tent with footprint, 10x10 Chill Gorilla Tarp, 3 inflatable pillows, Static V Luxe sleeping pad, food for myself and my dog, Sawyer mini filter, 3 litres of water, cook kit, fire making kit, small first-aid kit, folding saw, Mora knife, 3 headlamps, small LED lantern, battery bank, cordage, collapsible dog bowls, sleeping bag, and two complete changes of clothes with room to spare internally so the rain cover fits. I use the bottom loops to secure my dog's sleeping pad although the rain cover wouldn't cover it completely, it's easy enough to slide it inside of a garbage bag to keep it dry. If I didn't have to dog supplies, I could pack in two weeks worth of food and clothes with no trouble. The side pockets allow you to slide hiking poles, fishing rod, ax, hatchet, folding saw, tri-pod or other similar items behind them to hold it securely to the outside of the pack (although not all of it at the same time). All-in-all, it's a great pack for the price.More importantly, Teton's customer service also deserves 5 stars and reading customer reviews about their customer service was the main reason I chose to purchase a Teton pack. Here's my experience with them. This was my first adjustable pack and my GF misunderstood what I was asking her to do when measuring my torso and we got it wrong the first time. I ordered the Scout 3400 which turned out to be too small so I had to return it. No problem there. That's when I ordered the Explorer and the first one I received was what I would call a factory second. It was obvious that bag was overlooked by QC. It had threads hanging off of it all over the place, one strap was sewn on backwards, the zipper in the lid wouldn't zip completely closed and would work it's way open about 3 inches just from walking around with the pack on and one of the shoulder straps was frayed badly. I contacted Teton again about this pack, provided some photos and they sent a replacement the very next day, no questions asked. On top of all that, I mentioned in the email to Teton that the chest strap is pretty tight and they offered to make me a custom extension for the strap. As far as I'm concerned, this is a company that knows how to take care of their customers and stand behind their products 100%. They've earned my loyalty and respect and I would not hesitate for a moment to recommend them to anyone I know personally. This is one company that you can truly buy from with confidence that they will be there for you when you need them to be. Awesome!

    Totally solid

It was my first hiking backpack, and I've been testing it out extensively before this review. Granted I don't have lots of experience with backpacks, my last one was built in the 80s, so this one is far more comfortable to begin with. This pack is strong, lots of room, lots of pockets, very comfortable, and I have had no problems at all.Half of my pack is filled with "essential" gear, with maybe 2 sets of clothes.

Perfect for camping trip with jerks.

Great for long camping trips with your sons, that you carefully planned out for months. Every last detail thought out, every item specifically ordered for this trip, and packed with attention to daily activity and necessity. This included; special mosquito repellent clothing, new sleeping bags, expensive waterproof hiking boots. All items -times three - for me and my two boys. Needless to say, I never got to use this item since my sons left our bags in an unlocked car at the parking lot of our camp site. We came back from our six hour hike, ready to set up camp, only to find that our bags were gone. I always wonder if my sons did this intentionally so they didn’t have to participate in this camping trip. During the four hour drive to the state park, they found out that they had to hike, swim, boat, and participate with me in activities, with no internet access for miles, they were not happy. I sometimes underestimate what sneaky delinquents they really are. I think it was a real possibility that they worked in tandem to sabotage the trip that I worked so hard to make happen. That dream of father and sons bonding during an extended camping weekend is dead and gone, forever.

Osprey who? Perfect hiking, camping, and disaster go bag

I originally purchased the TETON Scout 3400 and it served as my hiking and camping backpack. In light of world events I decided to purchase the bigger Explorer 4000 to serve as my disaster emergency survival bag or "bug out bag" as some call it.I tried on several Osprey bags in REI with the intention to buy it online. None fit perfectly and they were all quite uncomfortable with a full load in the bag. I'm 6'2" 230lbs.

Good pack with a lot of versatility. The extra side pouches came in very handy for any last minute gear stuffs. I use a hammock tent sleep system so naturally there is no storage for the pack itself while at the camp site, having the rain fly that secures in the bottom of the pack is a nice feature even though this pack is fairly water resistant without it. The ability to adjust the back brace to fit more comfortably is a bonus. Previous packs I owned never fully fit right but having this adjustable system helped greatly in weight distribution.
