WOW what a great pack. There are so many cool features and at an unbeatable price. The sleep compartment pouch is kind of hard to zip shut when packed because the zipper is so close to the seam, but that's a minor gripe. Super comfortable shoulder/hip pads and allows for plenty of airflow. High quality construction and well thought out design. I've hiked around with it fully loaded with 40 lbs of gear and it was fantastic. Cant wait to do a few multi-day backpacking trips with it. The tarp/poncho is well made and has nice reinforcements in the corners, but I think I'd still want to have a separate backpack rain cover to protect the pack if I needed to use the poncho as a survival a shelter. This pack in NOT waterproof, but you can get waterproof stuff sacs to keep your sensitive gear and clothing in.

I wanted to love this pack

Well, I was excited to get this pack to go backpacking for the weekend as my 50L pack didn't have room for a foam pad and a tent on the outside of it. This has all the room I needed and then some.A problem though, When I went out backpacking the last weekend of May 2020 I noticed I did not have it adjusted right thus hurting my shoulders I fixed it but I also realized that If I were to have it how I needed it, it then digs right into my armpits. I have a 20inch torso so I figured a 20 inch length would have been fine however I did not account for my broad shoulders. I do not know for sure if this is the cause or not.It is a great pack but It just doesn't fit me, I should have figured I am 5"9 but I am 280lbs My waist is 48-50 inch which required me to contact Teton and ask for a waist extender.Guess I am just to fat to go backpacking.Sucks but anything I do find that would work for me is way to pricey.....isn't anyway I will ever spend $200+ on a backpacking backpack...

Used it for 3 day camping trip. Got rained out all 3 days contents inside remained dry during the hike. Material is very good and surprisingly did not get very dirty for a black bag. Padding is thick and pack was pretty comfortable to carry at around 20 pounds.

Awesome pack, especially for the price. I love Teton Sports. Quality stuff that you won't have to sell your house to afford. I fit a synthetic 20f sleeping bag, wood stove and air mat JUST IN THE LOWER COMPARTMENT. Plus the poncho/shelter is big and light weight. No complaints

Well constructed pack. Has plenty of space for long hikes or overnight hikes. I really like the unzipping of the bottom compartment that allows you to use the full length inside the pack. It can be zipped incase the bottom compartment is going to be utilized specifically for a sleeping back. I bought a Teton deer hunter bag -35 that I managed to fit inside a compression sack very carefully, that fits inside this pack...If you know what kind of sleeping bag I'm talking about then you know how 'impressing' that is! Granted this is not practical for a long hike, but good to know incase you do an overnight and want to keep warm during cool temps. For test purposes I was able to pack the following: Teton deer hunter sleeping bag, Teton head pillow, rope, 2 person tent, hatchet, hiking poles, 3L bladder, 2 32oz water canteens, and I still have a lot of space to pack food and clothing. I'm a big dude 6'2" 250lbs and was able to strap this baby on! The adjustable lumbar support is a nice touch, it allows you to put the weight where it needs to be. It took me several tries to get it just right but its worth the nuisance, you don't want to be hunched during your hike hurting your back or even doing a face plant...

    A Great, Big Pack

Ok, first of all, I loved this pack. It fit well, has lots for room, pockets for everything, and was a great pack for a 54 mile hike through the Elwah River Valley in the Olympic National Park. The construction was solid, the adjustability was great, and the ride was good. I highly recommend it with one small caveat. This pack is Big, like Huge, bordering on Cavernous, and it can have the tendency to get damn heavy! Not because of the weight of the pack but because you can stuff anything you want in this pack and pretty soon, you are humping 65 pounds for mile after mile. Just because you can fit it in this pack, doesn't mean you should carry it. If you can't control yourself with what you are bringing, get a smaller pack. Also, the pack can move a bit from side to side when it is heavy. This can make the log crossings and rock hopping a bit slow but I personally attribute that to an overloaded pack. Overall, a perfect pack for those who have control over what they put in it!

I got lost in the woods with this backpack, so I was off trail going through thick brush. Despite it being a large backpack, it didn't impede my progress and remained comfortable enough. There's a ton of straps and zippers that took me some time to figure out. Quality excellent.

    A really good 90L backpack

It's big and it's great. It's just a really good backpack.Pro:It can carry quite a lot with that 90L, but more importantly it lets you carry it comfortably. The back shoulder is adjustable and the hip strap sits nicely on the hip. Being a well supported and comfortable backpack, I by default highly recommend this backpack. There are also a lot of pockets and zippers, but the middle one is the only one you should care. It helps you open the backpack on the side, so no more throwing everything out to find that pocket knife you left deep inside. There is also an included tarp that acts as the rain cover for you and the backpack. If you want, the tarp can be used as a lightweight shelter/ tent.Con:There are a few cons, but none of them are that important. The tarp is great, but it's heavy. So if you left it out, you'll find yourselves missing a rain cover for your bag. A double edge sword here. Next is the zippers are a little weak. Maybe it's because of the angle of the sleeping bag zipper, but there are times opening and closing became more difficult. Also the side pockets are not side pockets but simply side zippers for the bag middle area. So watch out not to drop your pocket knife into there, or you'll still have to dig it out through the backpack. The last con is stupid. While carrying my pans and pots, I ended up rubbing four holes, two on the interior of the backpack and two on the bag carrying my pans and pots. The locations are on each side of the interior frames. The seemingly impossible still happened, so do note the interior fabric is not that strong, and you better protect your bag against hard equipment better. Also, my max weight capacity is no where near 60kg like someone who had tried. It's likely around 20-30kg.Overall, this is a highly recommendable backpack, but do care for it internally.

solidly constructed, nice layout, water reservoir pocket does not get squeezed even when the bag is stuffed full which is nice. top pocket is very useful for quick access to gloves or flashlight or whatever, only cons are my front pocket zipper occasionally wont zip all the way up and one of my load straps sometimes gets stuck.Update 1/32/20 I contacted Teton about the zipper issue and they sent me a new bag with no hassle. amazing customer service.

Pleasantly surprised with this backpack. I am one who usually sticks to what I know so I was leery about TETON, though I had heard great things from a few friends. My first outing with the pack was a 7 hour hike in the back country of Southern Utah. With other brands that I have owned my back and shoulder muscles usually give out before my legs so i was surprised when I had no discomfort, especially after a long hike, and even more surprised that they outlasted my legs. I even loaded the pack down with a lot of gear but the weight was distributed well.I also took the pack rappelling today with a lighter load and was satisfied with the performance in another arena. I am currently looking into the larger packs for a 3-4 day trip!

Excellent choice for backpacking through Europe (2 mo trip)

This bag was great on my recent 2 month backpakcing trip all around Europe. I don't remember ever having to check it becasie if its own size - except for Alitalia, and those flights had a 8kg (17 lb) limit. Even so, those flights were half empty, and i probably could have carried it on anyway. The bag is easy to load and easy to carry long distances if needed. The split hip pads were great, as were little things like the compression straps, the many places for attaching things, the D-rings on the shoulders, etc. Also, the support system on the upper and lower back was very well padded and provided very good ventilation. For taking another backpacking trip, I would definitely buy this bag again, and would recommend it to my friends.I would also recommend a travel cover or cargo cover, or convertible cover to use if you do have to ship it somewhere, because you really don't want a loose strap to get caught up in a conveyor belt somewhere. You have to modify the zipper pulls a little to make them lockable, but that was easily done in under 5 minutes with a pack of "S-Hooks" from the local hardward store, under $3.

Love this backpack! And wow can it hold a LOT!

I bought this backpack for a 12 hike. I loaded it up with all of my clothes and necessities and thought I'd filled it up. Then I needed to fill two 3 liter bladders. No problem. Then I needed to add 5 days of food for 2 people. No problem. Then I had to strap a 5 lbs tent to the outside. No problem! I kept adding more and more and all I had to do was lengthen the straps on the side to let the pack expand. I ended up with about 75 lbs and with the waist belt I cinched it down over my hip bones and never had shoulder or hip pain.I don't expect to need as much room in the future, however this pack adapts to the size needed so look forward to many more years of hiking with this beaut!

Very large capacity. Took it on 5 day backpack trip. Plenty of room for food, clothing and fishing gear. Only thing I dont like is no straps for sleeping bag. If you store sleeping bag in pack. You will be short on space for multiple night trip. I rigged up some additional straps for my sleeping bag, but it was awkward.

Tough Pack with Lots of Functionality

I finally bought this pack after having several other Teton Sports packs. This one had the features I wanted: 3L hydration, tons of exterior loop straps, lots of adjustment, durable zippers, minimal exterior pockets, compression straps, and be tough enough for off-trail use. I use this all 4 seasons and 27L seems just right for dayhiking. I lash all my snowshoeing gear to the outside in winter. In over a year there has been no loose stitching or popped zippers. No fabric rips on off trail bushwhacks. Teton's packs are hardly lightweight but certainly built for some abuse. Great pack for dayhikes - don't try to overnight in this one if you have a tent and sleeping bag.

I've been rocking one of these for a couple years now, taking it through hell all summer long on extended hitchhiking trips. It's been thrown around and scratched and soaked and pissed on and the thing is still going. And it has so. Much. Space. The simplistic design is what's up. Most bags have too many straps and compartments and all sorts of unnecessary bells and whistles. This thing has more space than any other bag without all the complexity. The design in terms of weight distribution is brilliant. I knew the first time I packed in and put this thing on my back that it was the only pack I'd ever need. When mine finally gives out, you can bet I'll be getting the same model.

You can't beat the quality for this price!

Finally got the opportunity to take this pack for its inaugural trip. It clocked in right about 50 pounds for my weekend excursion at some high mountain lakes in Montana. I packed it heavier than needed being this was my first backpacking trip in 15 years. It was comfortable over the course of the trip. Distributed the weight well and had plenty of room internally for everything from my tent to an expensive bottle of whiskey. It fit my zero degree sleeping bag well, and the straps in the very top came in handy for a small tripod chair. I wish the exterior of this bag had more clips to hold miscellaneous objects. I also would love a place to secure trekking piles other than in the side pockets. Other than that, this is a high quality bag and performed as well as my old osprey pack. Worth every penny! Update!!!!! 08/2017 -Took this pack 21 miles through Glacier National Park backcountry. This trip I made sure to measure my torso and adjust the 5500 accordingly. This was the most comfortable trip I have had with this pack. It keeps getting better each trip out!

Teton Sports nailed it with this one!

We are big fans of Teton Sports because they deliver high quality products at affordable prices. Since we already had two backpacks, a couple of sleeping bags, a backpacking tent and my wife's favorite pillow in our arsenal, when I saw the Mountain Adventurer 4000, I knew I had to try it.Loaded with all the features of the trendy brands, this pack had everything that I look for and more. It easily handled a 30 pound load with a separate sleeping bag compartment, lots of lashing points, hydration sleeve, external access points, map pocket, bottle pockets and so much more. The Mountain Adventurer is fully adjustable to fit a wide variety of body types. In my case, short and stocky, which isn't always easy to fit. This pack was a dream to carry. Ample padding and lots of adjustability! Perfect! Plus, in true Teton Sports fashion, they threw in a special treat... included in the hood compartment is a rain poncho/tarp shelter!! Who else does that? This pack is worth so much more than the price I paid for it, and that is why I always go back to Teton for more. It's a rare thing to get MORE than what you pay for these days but this is a brand that delivers.Great product from a great company operated by great people that love getting people outdoors. I'm a Teton Sports fan for life!

Plenty of storage and I like the separate sleeping bag compartment. The little extra bag on front is cool and you can use it as another way to strap something down. The padding on the carrying straps is thick and comfortable. It comes with a nice poncho so nothing gets wet—including you. Ok so I pushed this bag to its limits. I hiked the Grand Canyon with a full sack, about 40 pounds total nearly, give or take a couple, and this thing made it through unharmed and fully functional. Considering the rigors of my journey, how much I was throwing it around and using it for support on hard rocks and sharp edges, to not rip is amazing. Especially because it was jammed full too! Helped me survive, I'm grateful, I recommend anyone looking for quality. And you can wear it on the plane no problems too. Can hold a camel pack fine, but if planning a canyon hike, my advice, pack light lol I made it way tougher on myself carrying 40 pounds. Cheers!

I cannot speak highly enough about the functionality and quality of this pack for its price, as well designed and high quality as much more expensive brands. And Teton Sports customer service department is on their A game. I ordered the Mountain Adventurer 4000 pack to upgrade an older pack from a different manufacturer. As I was inspecting it I notice a flaw and contacted their support team about it. They went above and beyond in fixing the issue promptly and professionally. I couldn't be more pleased. I highly recommend this company and its products.

If you are looking for a bag as a professional, that you need to rely on... Teton from this experience, is the company that you can rely on. I had questions about the bag, and their customer service has always responded within the day.

We already have one teton sports backpack that has traveled with us for going on 3 years, but my wife commandeered that one, so I took the liberty of getting a new one! Score when I saw their new blackout series was out! I love the sleek design. Super light, but sturdy frame, with massive space and tons of accessible pockets and places to hook things on and if it's half as durable as our other teton pack, we'll give their lifetime warranty a run for its money.

Just used for an over night hike. I love that it has the arch on the back so it isn’t sitting on your back. It is cooler and you sweat less on your back. It has a full size sleeping bag in there, a 2 person tent, stove, food and clothes and all kinds of other junk. Lots of strap and back cushion. Nice pockets. Good price. Holds weight well. It’s my favorite now.

Blown away with the Quality and options of this pack.

I originally ordered this bag for my 8 year old son who is always going on outings with me and wanted a bag to carry all his kit. I measured to his tail bone which, once the pack arrived I soon found out was a little too long for him. The pack is super adjustable.. It went from almost fitting Him at 80 lbs to fitting me at 195lbs. The 420D shell is actually more sturdy than I thought it was going to be. The split wishbone design ln the side waist pack is a nice design, it allows me to get my knees over my waist when climbing without any bunching or pack balance being thrown off. The little pouch on the waist belt is too small for my iPhone, but it fits my headlamp perfectly. I like the Daisy chain loops for More connection points and I actually laced paracord through it to add the included Tarp poncho if it's too wet to add back into the pack. The Mesh netting/webbing is the best I've seen on a pack (no joke) I'd trust my Nalgene not to rip through and it'll hold up to the snagging tree limbs and weeds in my trails. I can add a tent into the webbing and use the tip straps to secure it. I can also add my Biolite stove the the webbing and it can be secured by the bottom nylon tensioning straps. The poncho tarp actually fits over me and the pack, The little guy and I used it to keep outselves dry from the spring rain, it was a little tight for two, but doable. This pack may have ended up being a little big for my son, instead of sending it back...I decided to keep it and order the Rock 1800 from Teton. Knowing what kind of quality to expect I didn't even think twice. So many adjustments and options I could go on even more.

Great backpack for day hikes and possibly a one nighter

I do have a couple of Teton packs, and I love them. I have two bigger packs for longer hikes, and one smaller hydration pack. I was looking for something in the middle to bring on day hikes, hunting, and even use in my RV on trips and found what I needed with Teton. Being 250 lbs, and 6 ft tall, it is not always easy to find such an easily adjustable pack (it fits me...with some slack) and we can easily adjust it to comfortably fit my 5ft tall wife. I was looking for a pack for my longer day hikes that lets me bring some essentials, food, water, stove, and maybe a small sleeping bag, as well as the DSLR and some tools. This pack does it well. It has straps on the bottom on the outside, that will let you attach a small sleeping bag. I also love the loops and storage pouch on the waist strap, lets me put the GPS and other little things in a convenient spot. The shoulder straps are comfortable, and like always there is plenty of loops, hooks, and D-rings all over the pack for extra external storage. The one thing I truly love about this pack compared to many of the other packs is the way the main compartment opens up. The orange zipper goes all the way around the pack from one side to the other, letting you lay it flat and access anything inside without having to pull everything out. It makes packing easier as well as accessing the one little thing that always falls to the bottom. I also love the color black, with minimal orange. Normally I go for the brighter packs, but in this case I love how well it hides. As always, Teton pays attention to the details, including a little whistle, and in a separate small compartment on top a orange rain cover that converts into a poncho, that converts into a emergency shelter. It has a spot for a hydration bladder with a hole stitched in, but does not come with one.

Bought this backpack and their Grand5500A year ago. Have been using them both since at least 2 or 3 times every month for mountain backpacking. The amount of weight these babies can carry and relief the weight off your back and shoulder is incredible. At some point this backpack was damaged in the shoulder area. I contacted customer service and they replaced the whole thing almost no questions asked. This is a real time life warranty. If you buy this backpack be ready that its gonna serve you a long time. And I mean a longgg time.

My friends and I each purchased one of these packs because we wanted to really get our camping packing down to one bag each. This pack did not disappoint and has been a game changer for us. The many zippers and buckles can get a little confusing but once you start to load in your gear you’ll be surprised just how much this can carry and how versatile it is.

Important note: this is an initial review.First things first, I absolutely lovey all the things I got from TETON. This item holds the #2 spot on my list, giving the first place to TETON Sports Camper -10F Sleeping Bag. (just because that one is so darn comfy).OK since we're done with introduction, I must say that upon the initial inspection there is absolutely nothing bad that can say about this backpack. It's absolute amazing for anyone who's looking forward to a long hike. It's extremely spacious, and you have lots of ways to get items that are packed in the middle or on a side. Plus It was easy for me to attach my Browning - Black Label Shock N' Awe Tomahawk on the left side of the hip belt (see photo)... for those who like a bit of "tactical". And the whistle was a pleasant surprise. However the backpack is large, large enough to camp for 5 or more days, and for those who are looking for shorter hikes like me, it might be a good idea to downsize unless you're OK with adding a little bit of extra items for comfort : )

Had this for 4 years - still a favorite

I bought this back in 2016 or 2017 and have used it actively since then. I can honestly say it is one of my favorite purchases. First benefit is the size. I can fit a winter bag in here along with everything I need for an extended stay. I'm 5'8" and 175lbs and have no issue carrying it. On an Arizona trip my son had issues. I was able to add the entire contents of his pack into mine with no issues. It's a big bag but you don't have to fill it unless needed but it's great to have the extra space when you need it. The next big benefit is the design. Good quality with no problems with hung zippers, rips or anything like that. Plenty of compartments to organize. I like the little addon day bag but I can't say I've every really used it. I've just taken that off. Lastly the poncho tent is an incredible addition on it's own. Ponchos are awkward because they drape but it keeps me dry other than my ankles when it pours. The large size is perfect and it works standalone, over the pack or as a tarp so very versatile. That alone is worth buying separately. Overall I'm impressed with the thinking that went into this product. It is a job well done.

This is my first Teton Bag. It looked smaller than expected, then realized after unclipping some of the clips it expanded. So if you habe a small load you wont look like a doof with a giant half empty bag. You can clip and use the pressure straps for shrinkage. The sleeping bag compartment has a nice size. I have a double mammoth that definitely wont fit in the compartment. Its for singles sleeping bags. Plenty of pressure straps throughout the sides, top and bottom of the bag. A couple of handy rings along the waistbelt for knives you can clip to. Poncho was stored on top pocket of the bag . It looks very well padded. Hope this bag lasts, not like my last 70L Jansport..top hood clip strap ripped. No more Jansports for me. I went with the Teton because i own a double mammoth sleeping bag and it is AWESOME. I also got some TETON pillows that feel great and are perfect for camping.

    A solid durable backpack

I took it out on a rough 8 days hiking trip and this durable backpack has proven itself. I took a couple of hard fall since the trail was slippery after the rain. My water bottle got banged up a bit but not a scratch on this bag so it is really durable. It is roomy, comfortable and light as well when I forgo the poncho rainjacket that comes with it.On a day trip with a family of 5, I was able to carry water, picnic food and supplies for everybody easily with this one bag. I like its clean slim look and when everything fits in the bag, it look clean with nothing sticking out to catch branches, rocks and other obstacles. The only thing I wish for is for it to be a bit more colorful since it look rather drabby. There is a streak of orange so I wish it is more prominent. But other than its conservative look, I would expect many years of useful service from this backpack. I'm about to go on a 10 day trip to Acadia National Park so I am really looking forward to strapping on this backpack again.

best I've ever used for the size and weight

Incredible backpack, best I've ever used for the size and weight. Weighs about 6 pounds. Is about 90+ liters in capacity total. It is well made and durable. Has a neat detachable "day pack" with its own straps. Has neat compression straps throughout, has extra pockets and adjustable pouches, ice pick holders, lateral access to main compartment from one side, and separate lateral pocket on the other size.I just love their packs. Has internal gear loops in the main compartment. Has "clam shell" design for front access to main compartment (as well as purse string access from the top), If the weight of your load is not a major concern, i.e., you are fairly strong and have a good neck and back, or if you pack your pack light, then this is the best pack for the money, with multiple features that more expensive packs don'e have. It's great, and I SWEAR I don't work for Teton.

I went on a 5 day backpacking camping trip and this worked well for me to carry everything I needed. I admit I am not a light packer and I also do not have all the small lightweight gear intended for intense backpacking, so I had this stuffed completely full. Great all-around backpack...

The Talus 2700 is an impressive all around backpack. Small and light enough for short day hikes, but large and rugged enough for multi-day backpacking (if you pack light). The main storage compartment has a generous sleeve for your hydration bladder and plenty of room for gear and food. I am a big fan of the wrap around zippered opening which makes access to all your gear so much easier. Plenty of room in the accessory pockets as well, including two side mesh pockets nice elastic openings to secure bottles or additional gear. The adjustable back straps are really nice and very easy to adjust. I am a bigger guy and have a little difficulty with typical packs fitting well. The Talus has so much all around adjustment that I was able to dial in the fit pretty quick. I also really like the wide waist belt so the weight sits on your hips well, like it's supposed to. I'm impressed with the overall thought put into the design.I've worn this pack out on a couple of short hikes now and it has proven comfortable and versatile. The construction seems to be solid enough to last with plenty of abuse and if past Teton Sports products are an indicator, this pack should last a good long time.

Used the Teton Grand 5500 Backpack for a 5-6 night backpacking trip in Yosemite (Tuolumne Meadows to Valley; and Half Dome) and was very pleased. Being 6 feet and 190 lbs this pack was well within the adjustment range for my size. I read a few reviews with concerns regarding the zippers but they were not an issue for my trip and worked well. The size of the pack make it great for longer trips and the lower compartment was a good size for the sleeping back and clothes. One this was one of the most comfortable packs I have have used. I also purchased 3 of the Mountaintop Adventure 70+10L packs for my kids and found the Teton was to be much bigger, more sturdy, and more comfortable (although they also worked well ). Overall for the price, I found this to be a great pack and will buy 3 more for my kids for this years backpacking trip.

This backpack is my go-to. I live and work on the road and it serves both purposes very well. I can pack everything I need in here for day hikes: snacks, water, and camera gear. Then when I need to duck into a coffee shop to get some work done, I throw my computer and camera batteries in, no problem. It's also very comfy, has a great rain fly, and pockets for the small knick knacks that can easily get lost in the abyss of a backpack. Highly recommend this backpack.

I loved the extra large size and roomy compartments. I packed it with 40 lbs of camping gear and it feels very comfortable. I especially liked the extra zipper openings to access the contents in the main compartment from the front and the side. I did have an issue with one of the straps but customer service was amazingly fast and courteous in sending me a replacement that took care of the problem. I definitely would buy another one or two for my sons in the future.

LOVE this High Quality Backpack with Plenty of Space for Everything I Need

I'm a scoutmaster of a Boy Scout troop and I've purchase many less-expensive backpacks over the years. I tend to be hard on my packs, and I've had a lot of problem with ripping, tearing, straps coming un-stitched and broken zippers on lower quality packs. I was DONE with low-quality packs and was ready to graduate to a backpack that can live up to the wear and tear to which I'm going to unavoidably subject it. I already had multiple packs, but didn't want to worry about the reliability of my pack any more. So, I purchased a Teton Sports Grand 5500 Backpack for me. I LOVE this backpack. You can tell that a lot of time went in to the design of this pack. My hat is off to whoever is behind the design. The things that stand out most to me on this pack are the quality and the attention to detail.I love the space in the Grand 5500 backpack, so I can easily fit in what I need. It always seemed like I needed more space in the past. This pack definitely provides that. I like that the sleeping bag compartment is larger than other backpacks I have, so I can much more easily fit a high-quality sleeping bag, air mattress, blanket, pillow, etc. into that compartment. With other packs I've had, most of that stuff has to go on the outside of the pack, and then it gets dirty and clumsily bumps into things. Plus, with the Grand 5500, that gear is much more effectively protected from the elements than just being tied to the outside of a smaller pack. If you do need to put something on the outside of these packs, they have many higher-quality loops, ties and compression straps that don't look like they are going to tear off. If you are a minimalist, less-is-more type of backpacker, then this pack may have too much space for you. If you like to have room to pack and protect the things you really want to make your backpacking trip amazing and comfortable, then you should seriously look at this pack. Have you ever had to ask yourself "Do I really need an air mattress?" or "Do I really need a pillow?" I have, seriously, because the other packs I had were so small. With this pack, you don't have to make those kinds of decisions. And, with the compression straps, you can make the bag smaller at times you don't need all the space.I really like how the back panels and the torso width are adjustable so they can be highly customized to me. I've never had that luxury before. I love the extensive padding in the lumbar area.I like the detachable bag for toiletries or other items to which you need quick access. I like the attached poncho/tarp for each of the packs. They not only keep the pack dry in case of rain, but can also be used to create a shelter in a wilderness survival situation. They are bright orange and would make it easy for someone to find you in an emergency.I love that Teton Sports offers a great warranty and stands behind their products. Although, I have a lot of Teton Sports products, and I've never needed to use the warranty.I guess I'm just passionate about Teton Sports, and trust the brand and products because of how their products have performed for me. I actually look for their products now and preference those over competitors. In short, Teton Sports provides fabulous quality at a fabulous price.

    More Expensive Isn't Always Better

I just purchased the Talus 2700 backpack from Teton Sports and couldn't be more thrilled. You know we tend to think and believe the more expensive the product, the better it is. But, this very reasonably priced backpack debunks that rationale. When I pulled it out of the box, you could immediately tell and feel the quality. The backpack I replaced was falling apart after just four years and it cost me 2x times as much as the Taulus 2700. I travel quite often for work and gave up the carry on suitcase a while ago in favor of a backpack. This pack has all the room you need. I've even stored my Canon 5d Mark 111 inside ( I never have jumped on a plane without it stored in my Pelican case) and felt comfortable with it stored in the overhead bin. As for the great outdoors, the daisy chain is a great addition. If you plan on hiking or traveling and need to squeeze more gear or stuff inside, I highly recommend buying two stuff sacks. As a lifelong San Francisco Giants fan, I just love the color scheme.I would my Talus up against any other and more expensive back pack on the market!

Teton Sports Grand 5500 Backpack is the best back pack for Scout Masters who need to carry ...

Teton Sports Grand 5500 Backpack is the best back pack for Scout Masters who need to carry not only their own gear, but the crew gear required for younger backpackers learning about the great outdoors. I've owned the Teton 5500 since 2016 with exceptional results. The pack has gone to Philmont for a 80 mile hike, Alaska for a 70 mile hike and several training hikes in the Great Smokey Mountains. The pack fits well due to the many adjustable straps to make the pack your own. Plenty of space for personal and crew gear with many pockets to help keep things organized. When I needed support to repair the pack, Teton Sports stood by their equipment with their Lifetime Warranty. The Teton Sports Grand 5500 Backpack is the pack you want when you need lots of space and comfort for long treks.

    Quality For A Great Price

I have been a fan of Teton Sports' products for awhile and they have upped their game with the Blackout lines of packs. Teton continues to deliver amazing quality for the price point which you and your wallet can appreciate on the trail.First off, the pack comes with a removable poncho that you can use for a variety of uses (including a ground tarp) but most importantly it reduces the weight of the pack by a pound and every ounce counts on the trail.Secondly, most packs on the market come in a few sizes which depend on your torso length. Teton is one of the only companies I know that has an adjustable frame so you can get the pack exactly how you like it.Finally, this pack comes with all the space and straps you need for your outdoor adventures. I still haven't gotten the knack of being efficient with my gear when out on the trail and I need all the space and lashing capabilities I can find and this pack satisfies all of my space requirements for a weekend adventure. Is this the most lightweight pack out there? No and there are ways Teton could have saved some more ounces here but it is a pound lighter than its predecessor and so far it seems durable and well made so if you are looking for a quality pack at a good price, check this one out for sure!

This pack is 5500 cubic inches or 90 liters. Lots of cargo space to plenty of gear for a multi-day trip and several options for carrying cargo outside this pack. You will run this pack too heavy before you run out of space. The material and stitching is strong enough to withstand the rigors of outdoor use and zippers have loop pulls instead of the traditional metal tabs. This makes opening compartments easier if your hands are wet or have diminished dexterity due to cold. Personally, I would have preferred the zippers to be the more heavy duty YKK type. Lots of ways to adjust this pack to achieve a good fit; however, the manufacturer did not include any tips or tricks regarding which and how each strap should be adjusted to achieve the best fit. This would be great for those new to the backpacking experience. The cargo pocket on the waist support belt is small, allowing for only a thin wallet/money clip, keys, or a standard size folding knife. Most newer cell phones will not fit in this pocket; nothing bigger than an old iPhone perhaps. My Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will not fit. This was a disappointment as a pocket large enough to fit at least a subcompact EDC is preferred. There is a small detachable bag that can used as a small backpack to carry some items needed while out reconnoitering base camp. Gear can be accessed through the top, front, and right side access points. The shoulder straps are thick and I believe will require a break-in period before they are completely comfortable. The chest strap clip doubles as a small whistle for signaling which I felt was gimmicky, it doesn't put out high enough decibels to captures anyone's attention from a distance. Your standard ref/coach whistle puts out over 100 decibels; buy one and include it with you every day camping kit. The perfect off the shelf pack doesn't exist; however, this one is pretty close

Love this pack, it's not crazy expensive like other sacks, it gets the job done and is extremely sturdy. Was able to fit all my weeks worth of clothing, typical camping gear as well as my camera gear with a tripod. The straps can get confusing at times but they're designed to keep everything together. Lots of little of hidden pockets and compartments to keep small items as well. The best part about this bag is probably the front-facing & side access you have to the main compartment, rather then unstrapping from the top and digging all the way to the bottom.

Mountain Adventurer 4000 first impressions: Light and Roomy. Easy Access to Gear.

I'm 6'2, 180lbs and it fit me well once I adjusted the torso pretty much all the way out. I was able to shift most of the weight to my hips as designed and was fairly comfortable carrying 45lbs (including water) on my backpacking trip last weekend. Overall, I think it's great backpack, especially at this price point. Note that I did NOT have an opportunity to experience this pack in wet conditions.how i carried what I carried:- bottom compartment: sleeping bag, foam pillow, bag liner, camp towel, rain coat, rain pants- main compartment: (in stuff sacks) food, clothes, stove, cookware, cot, trowel, camp saw, gadgets- top "hat" compartment: snacks, first aid, wipes, water filter. This was the part I accessed the most.- belt pouch: wallet, keys, pocketknife- strapped between top bag and main bag in that weird neoprene sheet, buckled to itself in a tube: tent- mesh side pockets: water bottle in each, head of my tripod chair strapped to the side- that little front flap pocket: toiletries, lighter- pants pockets: maps, phone (a.k.a. camera)pros:- Price- adjustable torso length- weight of only 4lbs without tarp- multiple points of access to the main compartment (top, one side, front, bottom)- sort of detatchable top bag could be used as a day hike pack in a pinch- really big side mesh pockets (the ones you put your water bottle in)- zipper pullsnit picking cons:- the belt pouch was too small to hold a modern smartphone- that weird gray neoprene top sheet that I couldn't figure out and couldn't remove- the "rain fly" is a heavy (1.52 lbs!) poncho for pack + hiker thrown in a pocket instead of the traditional lightweight fitted cover with its own storage compartment. I left it at home- location of the zippers of the top "hat" bag weren't as handy when the pack was laying on the floor of the tent. It kept flopping around while I was trying to get in and out of it.- I too experienced the "squeak" during a short part of my trip. Each step I took, the bag would make a squeak sound at the point where the internal metal frame terminated at the top behind my right shoulder. I think it was related to having the torso adjustment fully extended.- some zipper flaps got in the way of the zipper when packing. perhaps unavoidablesuggestions to the manufacturer:- provide thorough instructions for all of the features you have included for the bag. What did you have in mind for each compartment? What the heck is that weird neoprene-like sheet with buckles at the top for? While checking out the bag again for this review, I discovered a velcro opening at the bottom of the bag with another of those weird neoprene sheets. This may have been the "low and close to the body" place to carry my tent that I was looking for! It may also have been a better place to put the tarp, or a traditional, lightweight and attached rain fly. Help me understand the design you created with all that hard work!- stop the squeak!- consider modifying the top bag so the user can unbuckle it from the shoulder side and secure it onto the body of the bag while it's laying in the tent. Maybe with velcro? And make sure whatever side is facing up has an opening for access- make the belt pouch bigger wider to accommodate a smartphone and add another one to the other side- make the "flap logo pocket" on the back more expandable or remove it altogether. Explain its purpose.- a few parts were somewhat rubberized fabric. Maybe that would be a good treatment for the bottomDon't misunderstand me. I was very pleased with this bag at this price point. I was happy that I didn't have to spend $300+ for a fancy bag from one of the higher-end makers. Now if only I could easily upgrade my poor, tired feet! :D

    Amazing pack for the price

I've had this pack for almost a year now and am writing a review now based on using the pack hard for week-long backcountry work trips in Hawaii. I bought this pack to replace my old expensive name brand pack (named after a bird/plane) and thought that for the price, this pack would not be very good quality. I was wrong-this pack has held up carrying over 50lbs of gear across rugged terrain, off-trail, through cold and extremely wet conditions. The pack is super comfortable and filled to 50lbs feels like 20lbs compared to my expensive name brand pack. The padding around the waist and shoulders is super comfortable and doesn't dig into my hips or collar bones. I can't believe how much stuff I can cram into this pack and I like that it is simple and doesn't have a bunch of interior pockets that just add extra weight. The only issues I have: 1) the side mesh pockets ripped on my first trip but these rip on all my packs due to off-trail hiking. 2) The pack is not remotely waterproof so you need a good rain cover. The rain fly that comes with the pack is a poncho-style which is worthless unless you're hiking on maintained trails. The poncho fly gets caught on every piece of vegetation and does not stay attached well in high winds. I just purchased a separate rain cover and it works great.

Mines got some miles on her and still holding strong!

I haven’t left this at home since I bought it a year ago. Ive used it as my checked bag to Hawaii, Dominican Republic and Switzerland and it’s easier to identify than other people’s regular black square luggage. I’ve also taken it on a week long hike through the Rockies and had no issues it held up just fine compared to my friends osprey 75L. I threw it in the back of my truck for an 8 day road trip to Key West and it kept all my gear nice and dry. It’s hard to find a pack this size let alone this price, you really can’t go wrong! It’s been there for me on every trip and has become my home away from home. I love it

Durable and Rugged ... love it so much we now have two! :-)

The TETON Sports "Mountain Adventurer" pack is an outstanding product! The design provides ample room for gear inside the pack as well as plenty of gear loops, ties, and compression straps to attach additional gear to the outside of the pack, and with easy access. This pack is solid in design as well as materials and workmanship, very durable and rugged. We have been using the MA pack since the "Blackout" collection first launched in Fall of 2015 and we have taken it on many great adventures all over Northern Michigan and through a variety of weather conditions. It has held up flawlessly. We love it so much that this purchase is actually our 2nd TETON Sports "Mountain Adventurer" pack. We have an upcoming island adventure that will require us to fly by private plane with weight and size limitations and we felt that this pack would be perfect to use in lieu of a rolling duffel to allow us to pack ample gear and clothing while being able to meet the size requirements as well as better stow-ability.

I got lost in the woods for 8 hours while wearing this.It is pretty comfortable and there are lots of good features and storage options. I really enjoyed the quick access zippers and the compression straps felt really sturdy. If I had to pick one thing I didn't like it would be that the straps are pretty long. So long that you would either have to cut them or rubber band them together.Overall a really great backpack for the price that offers above average performance.Plus you get the included tarp/poncho/rain cover which is always nice.

    Spacious and durable

I’ve used this pack for ~500 miles in total now. It’s wonderful. Very strong material, with tough straps/buckles that don’t break. The zippers are generally great. However, it is worth mentioning that the bottom-most zipper pouch can be difficult to close if the pack is stuffed full (because the zipper goes around a tight right angle corner), but it’s not a big deal at all. It’s extremely spacious. For winter backpacking, I can comfortably fit 65 pounds worth of gear, including an enormous oversized sleeping bag.I recommend this pack for anybody looking to get serious about backpacking.

A very versatile and well made pack!

I purchased this pack to upgrade from an old external frame pack that has seen better days. This pack will be used for travel, but also for 2-3 trips to the woods,f or hiking and backpacking, primarily during spring, summer, and fall. The adjustable torso length feature appealed to us, since we have discovered that the pack can be comfortably used by me (5'6) or my much taller (6' + ) husband. We have given it a few test runs, and have deemed that it appears or be a very durable, comfortable, and versatile pack. The pack fits us both, with multiple, easy, adjustments at shoulder and waist. The pack is comfortable to wear on even steep uphill climbs; it is not a particularly lightweight pack, but even when loaded, the load is barely noticeable,as the weight seems comfortable dispersed. The pack has good air flow and ventilation. The sternum strap can slide up and down to vary adjustment, and has an integrated whistle in the buckle. The black pack is sharp looking, with nice color trim, and will not show the dirt and grime that will accumulate as we use this through the years! We determined the pack has adequate capacity for a few days; sleeping gear, backpacking kitchen, food, and a few clothes...we also found room for our dog's food. The lower compartment held a Teton Tracker +5 sleeping bag, with a snug fit, but we could not put my husbands XXL sleeping bag into this compartment. The pack has multiple attachment straps, accessory loops, and a small pouch on the hip belt ( which we found great for dog treats!). My Tubbs Snowshoes easily attached to the outside of the pack with the horizontal straps, and poles are secured nicely to the side of the pack. The side mesh pockets are deep, and hold a water bottle securely. There are 2 side access zippers, making it very easy to get into the main compartment, even when he pack is loaded and secured. We always carry a tarp with us, for emergency use. This pack comes with a combo poncho/rain fly/emergency shelter...a bit on the heavy side, but very nice, large, and it easily fits into the top compartment of the pack. We feel that this pack is a great investment, and we look forward to continuing to utilize it in many different conditions. It is versatile, and offers many possibilities for packing, gear attachment, and use by folks of different size. We feel confident in our recommendation!

This backpack is my favorite for many reasons!

This backpack is by far my favorite that I have ever purchased for hiking/camping! I purchased this hoping it would suit my needs for a hiking trip I am taking later this month and boy am I pleased with it. I had little confidence in a product made in Vietnam, but I have to say that the backpack is very well made! The zippers feel great, they're super easy to open. The seams on the outside are really sturdy. The number of pockets is great. My really big 32 ounce water bottle fits perfectly in the side pockets! I was really concerned that my water bottle wasn't going to fit, but it does with no issues. The small aluminum rod inside the bag contours your back and provides a real nice support when it is fully loaded. If there was one thing I would have liked, it would have been to include a water bladder. No worries though, as this bag comes ready to accept a 3 liter bladder, which is actually kind of nice because it allows you to choose one that you like. It has a small zippered compartment in the back where you can put the 3 liter bladder and is completely out of the way. There's a small opening marked "H2O" where the bladder hose exits the bag, and the shoulder strap has a small ring where you can clip the end of the hose to. Overall, the bag is great! I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase!

It was down to the Talus and another one that cost more than twice the price. I got on each of their websites and after reading Teton’s company info there was no doubt this was my pack. This is one phenomenal backpack from teton sports. I currently own two other packs from teton the 1200, and the talus 2700 and so far both have been a pleasure having, anyway onto the mountain 4000. With the 4000 you get soooo much backpack for the money its awesome that teton includes the pancho/tarp. Im a avid hiker who has climb multiple peaks above 10,000 feet and this here is going to be my go to now for camping or overnighters. I mangages to stuff in a mummy sleeping bag, a tent, 3 days worth of clothes, toiletries, a sleeping mat and inflatable pad, and still have room for a portable stove pans treking poles and a 3L bladder. Teton always makes incredible products.:Update: so this pack has performed great on a 2 day camping trip in Zion National park, managed to fit about 25 pounds of gear comfortably throughout my visit. Just a small gripe, i was planning on taking this pack on socals highest Mountain, Mt San Gorgonio a 11,500 MT. My fault i should have reserached it but i notice it doesnt have any loops on the outside to hang an Ice axe, which is extremely odd since the Talus 2700 has several. Im sure i can find a way to hang one but it most likely will look really tacky. Id only removed half a star for that.

Got this pack for a Rim to Rim hike in the Grand Canyon. On inspection, this pack is well made and very comfortable to wear. I've packed all my gear that I'll be taking on the trip and have been training with it - hiking, work outs (such as stairs, lunges, and just walking around the house). This pack is comfortable and adjustable where it needs to be.I'm about 5'10", 190lbs. The pack does fit a bit high on my waist with nothing in it, but settles down nicely with a bit of gear in it.Highly recommend!

When I pulled it out of the box I was not disappointed at all

Recently I received the Teton Sports Talus 2700 pack to try out. When I pulled it out of the box I was not disappointed at all. It is packed full of features and the little details that they pay attention too and wonderful. Now I do have to admit that backpacks are a weakness of mine and am also very picky about the functions on them. Teton Sports has listened to what we want and delivered. Some examples are the little elastic loops on all the straps so that they aren’t flopping around everywhere. On either side are large elastic/mesh pouches for a Nalgene bottle and the dual daisy chain is great for attaching gear too especially climbing gear. The main compartment can be accessed by the zipper that goes all the way from one side to the other so that you can get to everywhere inside without having to dig through your stuff. I recently took this with me to the field for 3 days and it held all my uniforms and change of clothes. My boots even fit in there as well. Teton Sports even supplies a poncho that can double as a shelter in the front top pocket. Between the daisy chain is a map pocket that I believe is waterproof if not resistant. Fully loaded the Talus 2700 rode fine on my 5’7” frame with the shoulder straps well-padded and the hip belt is double wishbone in design and is very comfortable. The pack can be adjusted to snug close to the body for climbing mountains and scrambling on crags. As always Teton Sports did not disappoint with this pack. I would give it 4 ½ out of 5 stars.

I don't like the poncho so I ordered separately a 90lt pack cove and it fit great. I am a thinner shaped 6" 2' man who weighs 165 with a 34 inch waist. It also fit our friend well who is only 5" 11' who weighs 240 and wears a 36 waist. It is well made I can not see any thing wrong with this pack for the price.
